Reporting back. I bought and applied light mineral oil (apparently, there is a "heavy" version) - seems to be doing the trick without ummmm inflaming anything. So, I am now seeing if my farrier will finally give US compliments on the shiny, young-looking ummmmm "stick"!!

I believe Benatus’ horse is 17. Mine is 24. And yes, it looks like flakey, dried skin, Hayburner. No farrier compliments for us!!

MC, I have used one of the commercial services with great results and low cost. Yes, they use poison but the better thing is that once on a spring and fall program, there are NO MORE MICE. Bridge of Clay by Zusak, author of The Book Thief. I think this is marketed as YA fiction. I enjoyed it. A lot. Basically, 5 boys raising themselves. A bit Lord of the Flies, but there are race horses, lots of animals in fact, and wonderful layers in this book.

I think one has to have some luck - or at least, not have bad luck. Current horse is a T'bred/warmblood cross, age 23, working 3rd level, is also a low-level hunter, and remains sound. I inject Adequan monthly. I started that last year. I am not sure he needs it but it is affordable and may help. I ...

Total Saddle Fit has a new girth with elasticized inserts. I ordered it with the neoprene backer. It fits well, no gapping. Perhaps worth a look.
