Re: The *Perfect* Dressage Horse (Physically). Your Examples?

This stallion caught my eye because of the TB look and breeding. He shares some of the same pedigree as my deceased TB. Now I would select for myself the large ponies and really like Welsh. https://www.warmblood-sales.com/HorseDetail.asp?HorseID=54641&UserID=11716 I think he looks more modern W...

Re: The Warm-up Arena or Crowded Arena (and your terrified horse)

I had a lesson a couple of years ago in a crowded warm up that was SUPER helpful. My mare is small, and gets intimidated by big horses coming at her or behind her - and there was a big, noisy stallion in the ring, and the rider would ride up pretty close to the other riders. The lesson involved - FO...

Re: The *Perfect* Dressage Horse (Physically). Your Examples?

It is much more about brain then conformation! I've been to several symposiums on conformation, and interestingly, the horses that seem to have the "best" conformation all end up with more soundness issues? I don't know if that is because they are pushed harder, or if that "too uphill...

Re: 2019 Test Clinic with Hilda Gurney at LAEC

We have a similar symposium in Nor-Cal on Feb 2 with Sue Curry!

Has anyone LOOKED at the new tests? I think they are a major improvement - 2nd level is less of a huge jump from 1st level, and 4th level test 3 is no longer a 20 minute canter marathon that makes PSG look easy!

Re: Another theory question

Riding forward requires both flexing and extending, and is about building fitness and developing energy. You can't have collection without those components. You develop carrying power slowly - if you look at the training pyramid, it starts with the horse going freely forward - energy and tempo. Next...

Re: Canter

I agree with Straightforward, you need more space. That ring looks REALLY small. He needs to go out and canter FORWARD. And don't try walk/canter transitions yet - get him forward in the trot, well balanced, accepting contact, bending in the trot - maybe (in a bigger space) do some 3 loop serpentine...

Re: Safe Sport

Good Grief... this doesn't even make logical sense... Who comes up with this stuff? It would have been pretty easy for them to say "do it before you show" I would have thought? Legaleeze and rules - NEVER state things in a simple, understandable way. Common sense, basic communication skil...

Re: Safe Sport

I am really not sure this will help kids - what WILL help kids is training for KIDS and their PARENTS! Did anyone watch the interviews of the Olympic kids who were molested? 60 Minutes devoted an episode to it - well worth the watch (although I say that about almost all the 60 Minute episodes, love ...

Re: Safe Sport

Mystic oak you can read a transcript of the videos I tried that and can tell you from actual experience that it will NOT let you complete the module or advance without actually watching the video. Believe me, I tried EVERYTHING to avoid those horrible videos. Living in a rural area has its issues.....

Re: Safe Sport

Oh boy, I had SO MANY problems with SafeSport. As far as I can tell, whoever created that series of training modules did not compress the video, so it is going to require VERY FAST internet speeds. It took me an ENTIRE DAY to get through the 3 modules, with hours of buffering video. I emailed SafeSp...

Re: Clipping

Almost everyone I know does either trace, field, or full body clips! I trace clip in the Fall (by two are both trace clipped already), then go to a "field clip" (no leg clipping) once it is cold enough to leave a blanket on. Our days have huge temp fluctuations this time of year - it is in...

Re: New USEF tests are out!

SO happy to see the simple changes taken out of Second Level 1 - I've been saying for years (decades even) that a canter/walk transition requires a high level of collection - more then should be required when "Dabbling" in collection (I consider 2nd level to be semi-collection, especially ...

Re: Is this person high? In re horse growth

While MOST horses achieve 95% of their growth at 22 months, that is not true of all horses (I'm pretty convinced there is no rule of horses that applies to ALL horses ;-)). My observation (having bred many horses, and having had several other babies grow up at my place)… The rangy, immature looking ...

Re: My hay delimma

I can tell you what I do, because I have a picky mare, and I have an IR horse. Luckily, we have a supplier the next county over who also does hay testing. He's got hay fields all over northern CA. So when he's got several different areas harvested and baled, I go pick up 2 bales of EACH hay. And we ...

Re: You can improve the walk.

Yes I agree, you CAN! It just isn't easy. I'm dealing with a Pony walk that is short and SLOW and gets a lateral tendency when he feels nervous, so I'm doing a lot of leg yield in the walk, and not riding with too much contact at the walk. And it is getting better - the lateral tendency is pretty mu...

Re: USDF tests for purchase?

Can I just ask a question? Why do people pay for the tests when they are available free on line? i realize I am clueless here. Some want a pocket sized book that is laminated (like Whinny Widgets), some want the test with diagrams showing each movement, etc. I am also anxious to see the new tests -...
