RTR, I would crop the photo because, IMO, it needs to be tighter anyway to emphasis the little girl and the texture of the mane. That picture from Tony is a mixture of in camera and post. He definitely manipulates the lights and darks to bring out existing textures and bring focus to the subect. I'm fairly confident the wall is the actual background.

RTR, 1/2 stop under at most. I would more like to see better detail in your shadows and better contrast in your midtones. Your whites are not blown out, and your blacks aren't blocky, but it's just kinda not *quite* there.

Most photographers I know re-size to accommodate Facebook, which is where a lot of picture sharing goes on. There are two basic image sizes for FB, 960 or 2048px on the long side of the photograph at a resolution of 72ppi. Most people are happy with the 960 because they can all be fit into one email...
