Re: Trying again, hope this is the one!

actually now that I think about it, my first steps of canter were brought on by a big forward spook...my husband was folding a tarp and she scooted forward and took two or three canter strides..scared me a lot but then I thought ..hey ..it was only cantering and she stopped when I asked her....so I ...

Re: Senior progress thread?

Well, interesting lesson this evening. Started by getting pony listening and reactive( in a good way) by doing in hasnd work..it also was to get me to feel the transitions and keep them soft even when leading. We did walk/trot and halt..it worked well to get her interested in work and sharp ....last...

Re: Trying again, hope this is the one!

Sometimes I wish I had other people to ride with...might make me look where I'm going and sit more even...and would be good practise for the warm up ring!!
Hope to get to some clinics next year!

Re: Trying again, hope this is the one!

Kathy J, my instructor is always telling me to rest my chin on her poll...and believe me I try...I just have so many bad habits. I could have some arthritis in my neck, probably do from years of pruning Christmas trees and looking up...but I think it is mostly habit...sometimes my neck gets very rid...

The only photo from my last lesson...lol...not too exciting. We worked on LY on a circle using counterbend to straighten and get her engaged. I suck at following directions but we had some good moments . Sigh, my head is always turned to the inside...love her ears.

Re: Trying again, hope this is the one!

Kathy J , your mare is so pretty! Love her rich color! I sure hope you are right about Morgan mares taking care of thier humans...I so need taking care of! She is registered as Amberfield's Cafe au Lait, a Desparado baby...I think they are numerous and from what I've read they all seem to be sane. C...

Re: Senior progress thread?

I have a lesson booked for Sunday morning, hoping the footing is okay...we are having some heavy rain . I really want to to get some hacks in but it's hartd because my older mare ,25 year old Tb, gets so upset when we leave her. I'm afraid she'll injure herself. If I trailer off property she is fine...

Re: Senior progress thread?

My goal for this summer was to get my confidence back...I'm almost there..I still have moments when I hesitate as I ask for the transition to canter...but it's so much better. It has not helped Lotties confidence...she worries about canter...so I have to buck up and make things easy and clear for he...

Re: How often do you bathe your horse?

I hose lightly after a hard work out, bathe with soap maybe twice thru the summer...I sponge her girth area and mouth after every ride...she loves having her muzzle sponged...and it gets ride of the slobber stains...shes a blonde gal(perlino). I wash her tail when it's getting icky but not often, ju...

Re: Scabby bleedy sores on the back of hind pasterns - winning the war

I did a little reading on Dew poisoning and scrathches and I guess the name can be interchangable....but seeing as my mare gets it from the dew I prefer to call it that...I also found a good product to protect her legs and keep them dry , best used after they are healed....It's Mud Shield powder...e...

Re: Scabby bleedy sores on the back of hind pasterns - winning the war

My mare gets dew poisoning...much like scratches....the vet told me to wash off the scabs with Betadine scrub...leave the soap on for 15 minutes to help soak the scabs off , then pick all the scabs off and treat with Special Formula.....but I found it easier to wash, then dry , then coat with zinc o...

I'm having fun with her, been on a few hacks and have had her off property , actually took her on a mini vacation and did lessons and hacked and she settled into her new digs immediately. She needs a lot of correct schooling and I need a lot of lessons...but we're working on it. Someday I hope I'll ...

Re: Does your horse use gestures to communicate with you?

My older mare lifts her hind leg and looks at her belly if she wants her udder scratched...and she may be out in the pasture 20 feet away from me....she licks her lips when she wants fresh water...her's might be warm....or butts the water tub with her nose.

I've been mulling this over in my mind for awhile..if I could retire I would love to have a new horse to play with....if I retire I can't afford another horse at this stage of the game,no savings and only seniors pensions so I really can't retire anyway.... If I don't continue to ride I think riding...

Just curious, are you lopsided when you stand? I was always fighting a collapsed left side, hip and shoulder..then I realized I'm the same way off the horse. I had xrays recently and have two curves in my spine . Has you chiro done x rays?
