Re: Lameness locator

The machine is only as good as its programmer. I continue to be unimpressed by veterinarians who have a poor eye or palpation skills and rely on technology to assess lameness.

Its a continuing trend of using technology to make up for lack of assessment and palpation skills. This. I don't see the need, I'll take a vet with good eyes any day thanks. Human versus machine... Re: old horse and my farrier

There is on useful trick that allows the horse to not have to lift the leg and flex the joint when they are older and getting trimmed. Find an area with dirt and dig a shallow hole. You position the horse with the leg hanging over the hole. My farrier did this with an old horse I knew. Other way to ...

Re: The "tells" of correct/incorrect work

This is an article I helped Manolo write on what the horse's topline says about horse and rider. It has some pointers. I also wrote an article about what the horse's body says but its turning into a booklet so not sure when that will come out. I think we have to look at muscular development and post...

Re: Feeling like a failure as a dog mom

Can you put a line up between two posts or trees in an empty area like a lawn so there is nothing to get entangled in, put a halter on her - not collar - and attach her to a long line so she can move a little. Add some shade, a water bowl, a comfy bed and she would not have to be crated as much as y...

Re: Horse locks/tightens jaw.

"it's harder so he will resist." If the body has been conditioned and is able to accommodate greater angles the horse will not resist. Riders perceive as resistance something the horse has NO CONTROL over, namely his physical condition. If a horse is not straight ie even in its musculature...

One of my favorite author. I was given the Claudine series when I was a teenager and I never looked back. I still have the four leather bound volumes in my bookcase. Beautiful illustrations. I also LOVE Dialogues de bêtes, Les Vrilles de la Vigne, Le Blé en herbe, Sido, La Maison de Claudine, La Nai...

Re: Horse locks/tightens jaw.

When your horse's body is supple and straight, it wont lock and tighten the jaw. This is why the mouth come last. Your horse is not resisting and he is not bending simply because he is crooked and he physically cannot give anymore than he does. What happens when this is not understood and riders and...

Re: a few questions before I royally mess up the horse I'm leasing

You are describing a crooked, unbalanced horse. That is not fixed with auxilliary aids and new bits and it is not the horse's fault or an attitude defect. It takes time to re-develop the muscular mass so the horse is even on both sides and can use himself evenly rather than have a contracted side. T...

Riding slightly under tempo is very good for stiff horses - that would be the majority of horses. It helps with muscular tonus, breathing, coordination and processing information and learning.

Re: Holiday Euro Style

I know this system. In France for example some clubs send horses out to pasture for 6 weeks in summer when owners are on vacation so the horses can relax and have "horse time". I know Colonel Carde's Junker went on such vacation but also some of the Golden Gate horses in SF. If a horse goe...

Re: Success stories for croup-high horses?

All the side reins are training her to drop her back. This is not the way to creating a good posture and healthy horse. It is also not dressage. Tie her not so short so she can drop her back when you groom and saddle her. Work on her longitudinal suppleness and balance not on creating a frame.

This is posture in movement and no horse shuffles like a geriatric patient with crippling arthritis naturally so no, its not natural. They make me sea sick.

Re: The first rollkur thread of the new DDBB!

Posture is everything, it cannot be said enough because somehow it falls on deaf ears again and again. Posture dictates the soundness and quality of the movement. Rollkur, LDR, this kind of awful shuffle? Not health postures. The only difference is what gets damaged and where the horse hurts.
