Re: Calming supplement?

Use Drugs! My little mare is a quiet sort, but after a few months handwalking only, and all the horses on the property feeling their oats after prolonged "stall rest" due to weather, we are using ACE for under saddle walks so she doesn't re-injure herself (or me) with explosive spooks. For...

Re: Goals and Progress - December

Walk under saddle 20-30 minutes daily, no arenas. (rehab). This is harder than it sounds due to weather (wind, deep muddy patches) and the typical activity going on during our usual early morning ride time. A few minutes of relaxed, free forward walking feels like gold!

Re: Progress of sorts -edited to or am I kiding myself

She is a beautiful pony! If you are not enjoying training with her you have a hard decision. If you do want to continue, as mentioned above it can be helpful to watch videos of more accomplished riders. Ideally training/riding videos close to the level you and your horse are at, and not in show clot...

Re: The Warhorse - the Tale of Tuddy

My little black freight train took off from the mounting block as I was swinging a leg over.. the first time I rode her early in the morning during her usual turnout time. Fortunately she took me with her as she made a beeline for the pens so it was comical rather than deeply upsetting. I had to be ...

I love him! I think he will get more confident in his work and so will you. You'll be less worried about his spooks. He does appear willing and responsive :) Have you ever done the yoga breathing where you kind of snap your abs back towards your spine? Stand up square, press your fingers to your bel...

Re: The Big Bay Baron - Now known as #warhorse

"Pushy" seems to be a breed trait, along with "smart" and "food-oriented". I scoured the internet for anything I could find when I got my little black freight train. Even some of the breeder's pages described "very pushy until leadership is established". I fou...

This is perhaps a stupid question, but why not just feed 1/4 cup rolled oats instead of grinding it into flour?

Re: The Big Black Freight Train

Gigi is a Blanchard - Mt. Rouge Fox Gilo/Blanchard Sultan Windy. I don't know much about the Canadien breeding, but she has little to none of the Henryville line. Think they are all closely related :) Her rump is more sloping and less ROUND :)

Hope your English saddle is comfortable for Lucas!

Here is a snapshot of Lucas' cousin Gigi. It was taken at a bad angle and made her body look tiny, but perhaps you can still see a resemblance. She alternates between a bright, Welsh pony kind of expression and a cute stubborn draft face. :D

Re: The Big Black Freight Train

I don't know how Western saddles are built, but a little tight in front does not work well for my little Canadien with her (relatively) big shoulders and big shoulder movement :)

Re: The Big Black Freight Train

My little mare is under 15h seems very wide with her giant barrel. It turns out she's a M to M/W (in "good weight" and the biggest saddle issue has been front-to-back length of saddle[ She packs a good amount of movement into her short frame so what appears to fit her while standing still ...

Re: The Big Black Freight Train

Must get some pictures of my little black mare. She is very similar in type (of course) but her neck ties in a bit lower and her sturdiness not quite as sturdy! She has the requisite white star and giant barrel. I'm amazed to see how thick her mane might be if I didn't keep it semi-pulled  (A...

Re: The Big Black Freight Train

Watching with great interest as I am the happy owner of a small black freight train (little Canadien mare). She too is very smart and trainable. She loves having a routine (like all horses, but more so). I will say she benefits from days off, and some variety. If we do the exact same thing every day...
