Just noticed this was an older thread--how is your guy doing Jenifer?

Re: Despooking thoughts

I have a similar type; a percheron/paint cross that was a Mennonite driving horse and then pulled a tourist buggy around Amish country in Lancaster county. He is very shy, doesn't like strangers, hates clippers and the farrier. I have had to be very patient with him, but it has been so rewarding to ...

Re: AA rider and trainer showing horse at the same time?

Beautiful horse! I have similar plans for my young horse. See where my dressage and event trainer can take him, while I compete him at the lower levels. I keep my guy at home, so I ride him most of the time. Which means it will take longer to bring him along, but I am in no hurry.

Re: Show me your dutch harness horses/crosses

Thanks Velcro. Yes, his face, especially his expression in the 2nd picture, is very similar. And Wally also seems to have the sabino gene, although that doesn't seem to be too uncommon in the DHHs. And he may have a marbled eye--he has a glob of blue pigment in one eye.

Re: Young horses of 2011

Flight your guy is looking gorgeous! He's so big! I am expecting (and hoping) Wally is going to fill out quite a bit with his breeding, but he sure is taking his time.

Re: Show me your dutch harness horses/crosses

Thanks Velcro! My guy came from Canada although I don't have any information on his breeder. We are starting to see more DHH's around here that are likely Amish-bred (my equine dentist calls them "Amish Cadillacs")! I've heard some people say the DHHs can be difficult, but so far mine has ...

Re: Having Sticker Shock: How much do your trainers charge at a show

Same here. I've only been to one show with my dressage trainer (I usually go with my event trainer) but she charged the same as for a lesson + a training ride for coaching me in two classes and riding my young horse in 2 classes.

Re: Show me your dutch harness horses/crosses

He is lovely Ponichiwa! Thanks for posting the pictures. I don't have Grand Prix aspirations for my guy (although my dressage trainer sure does love him!)

Re: Young horses of 2011

Lol, Sue, don't slink away! I can't even imagine my guy doing novice right now. He is so immature I worry about jumping him over the 18" jumps! They are mature at their own rate.

Show me your dutch harness horses/crosses

I bought a 4 YO cross (out of a hackney/clydesdale mare) early last spring, and he is really turning out to be a nice horse. Great brain, loves to work, and learns quickly. He was a hot mess the first couple of times we took him off the farm, but he has really matured and even picked up a couple of ...

Re: Challenged to Gallop

My gelding had a similar issue. I put my leg on, and all his energy went up instead of out. I think this is common in horses who are naturally round-moving (Andalusians, friesians, and in my guy's case Dutch Harness Horse) but don't necessarily find it easy to move OUT. My DHH cross has a great gal...

Re: Ah HA! I TOLD you so.....(Color Bias)

I have gotten scores that have surprised my trainer on my paint draft cross, and some judges score him consistently lower than others. But I think, if there is a bias, it is more because of his type than his color.

Re: Young horses of 2011

Thanks Flight, your guy is gorgeous. I'm really happy with Wally's progress, he is obviously still green, but we have been trying to get him out and about. His first 2 schooling shows he had some temper tantrums during his tests (scary letters!) but his last 2 have been much better. He is growing up!

Re: Young horses of 2011

I have a 4 YO dutch harness cross. He is my LL eventing prospect, but his dressage is really coming along nicely. Here is a picture with my event trainer. https://www.flickr.com/photos/40820162@N04/21545260904/in/datetaken/ And a link to training 2 test at a schooling show with his dressage trainer ...
