Re: What is your cold threshold for working horses?

During the winter I trailer to an indoor arena, my outdoor is usually either too wet, or frozen solid for most of the winter. 20F is my cutoff, and that means it's at least 20F outside and hopefully a little warmer in the indoor--at least you don't have any wind. My horse seems to do fine with this ...

Re: Besides WB - what do you ride

I ride my daughters little 14.3H QH just to keep him in shape, but when I do, he has to go on the bit! And man, it's EASY for him. He's a compact, sensitive little guy and quite fun! Only problem is, he STALLS out majorly at some point in the ride. Yes, he's out of shape, but I also think it's in hi...

Re: Having Sticker Shock: How much do your trainers charge at a show

Re: Winter Feeding of the Older Gelding

My vet concurs with pawsplus that beet pulp really doesn't have much caloric or vitamin value. It's basically roughage. I'd supplement his hay with alfalfa as suggested. I had REALLY GOOD grass/alfalfa mix hay last winter and my hard keeper was FAT. Other than that, he's on an alfalfa based complete...

Re: Pasture board, your location and hay

I am in southern Ohio which is similar climate to IL (we came from Chicago and have relatives still there and always compare the weather!). I just started throwing a few flakes out to them once a day. The first few days they didn't clean it all up. Now they are scarfing it all down. There's still gr...

Re: Bringing the older horse back into work?

I did that last year, not due to soundness issues, but just because of lack of time. He sat from December to March. He was 8 last year, and he came back to full condition, maybe even a little better off than where I left him, in about 60 days. The trot work was good after a few weeks, but his canter...
