Re: Ant infestation

Sympathies. Our house was built on an ant hill. We were the first occupants. When we moved in, winters were okay, but warm temps were iffy. After a few years, ants became a problem in summer. Then they started marching through the house in winter. They would march into the freezer and stack their co...

Re: Energy!

Nope, I can relate. I want so much to be "in harmony" and soft that I unwittingly let my horse plod around comfortably. My trainer finally took us back to square one, loose reins, get the horse MOVING at a walk, and take it from there. It has been very beneficial. Once I get him listening ...

Re: Spinoff: When do you not ride because of the heat?

Live in the desert north of Los Angeles and we have pretty steady temps greater than 100 F often running from June-October, although last year it seemed like summer ran from March through early November. On hot days I try to ride early in the morning, if work allows. Otherwise I have to wait for the...

Hi Mark!!

So, I am at work, and need to learn a new virtual CPR website offered by the American Heart Association. I have done CPR training for about 30 years, so I am feeling pretty comfortable...until I start this new virtual test and nothing goes right. I keep clicking on icons and they do not function as ...

APF? Anyone using it?

APF? Have you used it? I am researching it after a recommendation by my trainer. It looks expensive, so I'd like to have some more information before making the investment. I am looking to increase my Percheron cross's forward without making him hot. He tends to be a bit anemic. Thanks.

Re: Horse show snacks

I think string cheese is a variation on mozzarella: it is rich, buttery, a bit bland but satisfying in that buttery mozzarella kinda way. And it is made so that the proteins break into "strings" like a braid.

Horse show snacks

Showing this weekend and I don't want to make the mistake I made last time: riding while starving. (They do sell burgers and such but I may not be able to leave my guy long enough to purchase one.) What snacks do you like to take to shows?

<y trainer is starting out on her own professionally. I am honored that she believes that she will benefit by being seen at shows as my trainer. Hence she is charging me for a lesson to coach me at a show. I consider myself very lucky!

Wow, some impressive fitness here!! My 40 hour/week job really impinges on fitness time! I am lucky to have minimized my commute so I try to walk 1-2 miles in the morning before work and cycle 2-3 hours/week minimum, as well as equestrian stuff 4-6 days/week. Would love to do a more intense w...

I couldn't stay awake for the entire thing, but did think Hilary displayed her extreme comfort in that arena. Re: Cross training: Trail riding?

Trails in my area means tackling big hills, walking up a (boring) dirt road, or crossing a REALLY busy local highway. So I opt for the hills. Depending on our mood and the weather, we will tackle all or part of the hills, working on FORWARD for the uphill and placing weight on the hind for the downh...

Re: Creaky. What to do?

As a cyclist and erstwhile gym rat, I used to depend heavily on NSAIDS (i.e. ibuprofen) for pain relief. But think about what research has proven: NSAIDS reduce inflammation. Which is nice. But what leads to muscle growth?? Inflammation. So use of NSAIDS for pain relief is a double-edged sword. Redu...

Re: Creaky. What to do?

What is your usual level of activity? I have wrestled with creakiness for the last 20 years, since my early forties. I have found that greater activity levels lead to less pain and soreness in general. I think the biggest problem I encountered was the 2-3 hour commute daily to work: once that was el...
