You are remembering this incorrectly. It was $1 per hide to SALT them. Huge difference. You can salt about 30-40 hides per hour.

Where we have failed....

Someone asked where we have failed. I think this news article shows where we are failing as a society as a whole even with no guns involved: http://www.wltx.com/story/news/local/2015/10/26/spring-valley-high-school-incident/74645568/ The girl is clearly in the wrong. Did our parents not realize how horse crazy we were as children? I had a goat I rode, got a cow and rode it and FINALLY parents understood and bought me a horse. But what took them so long?

Really cute!

Chisamba... I love the different perspective you just put on this. I'll have to think about that with my mom and others around me that are guilty. I think in some of the above scenarios though, it is just the people do set greater priority on shopping trips etc etc and just don't think twice about w...

Haven't you ever had a horse step sideways and catch the edge of the opposite shoe and loosen or pull it? Actually, no. I never have. That was my only horse that ever lost shoes. I rarely shod my horses though and never have since pulling her shoes. She's never stepped on herself either, never forg...

I can't blame my mom's being tardy EVERYWHERE on mental illness or drugs. I was responding to carpevita's sister's behavior with the meal. I know that some are chronically early or late and I don't find that particularly odd, but not letting your family eat the food they brought because it had to b...

Re: Moderately clubbed foot-to shoe or not to shoe?

Sure they can! My mare pulled hers off in the mud all the time. I think what happens though, is that another hoof slips and ends up on the shoe and pulls it off. I've stepped in same mud that can take a tight fitting boot off a person though. It wouldn't be hard to believe a shoe could be ripped of...

Since my dog also eats them occasionally - I asked my vet and he said they were not toxic and will see them eat the fruit too. Why is it that shoes come off willy nilly when you want them to stay on, but when you want to remove them you can't get them off whatsoever? I don't think they can fling a shoe off, nor can mud suck them off, Sure they can! My mare pulled hers off in the mud all the time. I blame it on the person p...

Re: Training a gaited horse to trot

Does he do the gait in the field at all? If not, I'd suspect something pain related and that he's not gaited at all. When my mare was first diagnosed as navicular, she'd pace on lunge line or under saddle in the walk. I've seen many other horses do this since learning that this could be a pain issue...

Similar to khall. South Carolina. I have two horses and one cow on more than 30 acres - about 22 acres in pasture. I haven't fed grain of any kind or any other "feed" except carrots to keep them coming up over the last three years. Before that, I was only feeding two cups a day per horse o...
