Re: Hello and Trail Ride

Hi. I'm just gobsmacked by this weather. I have plenty to do but I don't want to do anything but go to the barn. I'm re-riding (is that the term?) after not having a horse for almost 30 years. At 66. I'm half-leasing a spotted draft horse named Duke. He's big oaf and I've been taking things very ssl...

Re: Not much changed on Definitely Dressage. What has Chance been doing?

I went to the Midwest Sheep and Fiber fest in Jefferson, WI this September. I don't knit, spin nor have sheep. It was still fascinating -- all of it. My sister decided to come at the last minute (she does knit) and thus BIL had to come so .... I had a relatively bored man in the back of my brain the...

Re: Packing for a Month in Philadelphia?

Be careful vacuum packing down. Somethings you can completely suck the heck. And it's way fun. Feathers ... No. Reduce to half volume only.

Very thin down (I think) jackets are all the rage. No more balloon styling.

Re: Simple pleasures. The grilled cheese sandwich...

Grilled cheese and tomato soup were the American public schools' homage to Catholic meat free Fridays in the '50s. Friday lunch was either fish sticks (loved 'em) or grilled cheese and tomato soup. Always. My fav is Deli Deluxe sharp cheddar (which is, in fact, American cheese with flavor--no plasti...

Just spent 2.5 hours digging/pulling quack grass out of my garden plot beds and paths. Wasn't in all that bad of shape. Not done yet. *sigh* But 6 of the 8 beds are prepped and composted and/or planted.

Google maps ... how to acquire high rez image?

Anyone know how to make a google maps satellite shot good enough for a photograph? 8 x 10 would be great.

My sister, BIL and I are in the latest shot of our cottage. Kayaking. It would be great fun to have the photo. Intellectual property notwithstanding.

I don't know about planting leeks for winter. I've heard they can winter over if they already exist but I don't know what you get in the end. Ah .... there are two cultivars. We need to plant them in the spring. The late season ones can go into winter. But you can't plant them in the winter.

Re: Planting garlic today

I have planted garlic from the local health food co-op which came from a local organic farm. Worked fine. Also shallots. Do not buy garlic from a grocery store. That will have been treated and is probably from China. Some garden center have different varieties available, but ours are well out of sto...

Pretty good year altho early-ish hard frost did in a lot of unripe peppers. Now we are back to 70s. Still have brussels sprouts, tronchuda and russian red kale and a ginormous collard plant going. My peppers and tomatoes always have a lull when it is too hot to set fruit and then come on strong late...

Re: Planting garlic today

Google is your friend.

Take heads apart. Leave paper on the cloves.
Prepare bed
Plant fat side down, six inches apart, two inches deep.
In Wisconsin we mulch heavily with marsh hay, say "goodnoght" and walk away.

Huge grin on my face this a.m. heading back to the barn after venturing further afield with Duke. He had a small snit going up a hill that was taking him away from visual contact of the farm and more important, his pasture with his mates. That got him a boot and he settled right down. And at the top...

It makes me sad that: 1. people are smirking and 2. anyone would care that people are smirking. My dear friend did her Century Ride in 2008 on a Hano/AA mare she bred. It was just lovely, not a dry eye in the audience and a great little brunch/party followed. It was a great goal for her, not to keep...

I don't know how new the bridle is. It's in good shape. His owner grew up on a boarding stable and is very organized. Bridle goes in a bridle bag. Lead rope gets coiled like the RCMP. Grooming box arranged just so. We aren't doing any trotting outside yet. He's a clod ... I'm sure he would trip. The...

Hello! I'm 66 and had not ridden except very occasionally since my TB was retired in 1988. And I moved from the mountains of Colorado to Lincoln, Neb.
