Re: shoes and performance
I think you are very lucky that you haven’t seen any horses that have needed shoes. I’ve seen many, but I also have a lot of experience with off track TBs. Miro has great feet, but unfortunately, his circumstances changed because of his ridiculousness in turnout. My choices were, put him in a group ...

Re: shoes and performance
Miro has great feet, grows a decent amount with hard horn and good soles. We had to put shoes on because with his paddock antics in the stone dust, he was wearing his hinds down to nubs and we felt it was better to put shoes on than to contend with possible crushed heels. He rode well before, but I ...

Re: Video discussion thoughts on this work? Daniel Dockx on Stretching and Collection
My 2cents for what it's worth, when I do stretching work, I do have my hands wider in stretching work than in regular work - maybe hip width, or slightly more unless I have to momentarily move a hand away or closer to the horse's neck for a correction. I incline slightly forward and I do drop my han...

Re: suppleness, collection, mobilization, elasticity, impulsion,
Chisamba, I loved reading your descriptions - I agree whole heartedly with you. And I can see head/neck as being part of the "drivers". For instance, if the horse stiffens in the poll or jaw, that cascades back to the hind as well.

Re: suppleness, collection, mobilization, elasticity, impulsion,
This is an awesome topic. I have a little bit of a stream of consciousness but also hopefully will address some of the comments/points. So one of the things that I've been taught is that there are 3 drivers in a horse - the shoulders, the back, and the hind end. You have to have control of all 3 dri...

Re: straightening after half pass
The biggest mistake that I see people make is what Chisamba mentioned. When they get to the end of the half-pass, they let the shoulders lead and it kind of fizzles out and then they skate around the corner. To "finish" it, you need to make sure that the haunches and shoulders hit the rail...

Thanks Demi and Blob. And yes, when he locks in, it feels great, and there's no balancé or swinging. But, we're talking only a few steps at a time here. He's got a long way to go. Re: Keep Calm and Canter On: May and June Goals and Progress
We finally was able to get some shots of Miro this weekend as he works through the development of the passage. Demi, I don't think the neck is tied in too badly, but yes, it is a bit on the low side, the nice thing is that you have a decent length of neck, so she would have an easier time coming onto the bit than a really thick, short neck. If I was longing Rocky, my guess is that i'd have the side reins qui...

Re: Neck conformation
I've found that not only is it how the neck is set on, but how they use their backs that really determines things. For the horses getting started, the side reins are adjusted to how the conformation is - so a horse that comes out low and needs to be lifted may start on the triple and then be moved u...

Re: Too much separation of the hind leg in canter?
Agreed with the points other posters made. Typically, in very young horses, or horses that lack strength, you see a huge reach with the inside hind leg, but for dressage, what you ultimately want to develop is carrying power, that leads to collection. As the horse starts to carry more, the joints of...

Demi, my suggestion is that when you feel Rocky get heavy, you can do a full downward transition, regroup and go back up again. On some horses, I may do 50-60 transitions until they start to realize that I'm not going to tolerate leaning and that they need to balance themselves. On the thigh pressur...
