Re: Can we talk about ankles?

I did vet wrap originally, but have since found the tubular compression bandage much more helpful for keeping swelling down and strapping tape better support.

My vet wrap supply is now back in the tack room ;)

Re: Freaking TICKS!!

Going to do the Seresto collars next year for sure. Deer tags? Not familiar. Off to research. http://www.phoenixpharm.co.nz/Products/pythoneartags.html You plait them into their mane, so they have direct contact with the skin. No ticks will go near them, while they have this in contact with the skin.

Re: Who has a goat?

I had an oberhasli that lived until about 15, she was ancient. She was the most kind soul, not at all a troublemaker type. She kept my horses company. When she died we were absolutely crushed--I had somehow gotten her through some bad winters (she had a "goat coat" foal blanket) but event...

Re: Compressed field bales

Ok looks like a normal 10-12 bale square =500kg = 1/2 ton bale. I feed them all the time in winter. Same rules apply to this bale as the smaller bales. Don't let it get wet or any moisture in it. Otherwise mould will be a huge problem. Keep it off the ground. Horses will leave a lot of it on the gro...

Re: Pasture board, your location and hay

Rule of thumb for me, is that when a horse starts loosing condition is the time where you need to start feeding out hay or boosting up their forage intake. If you can time it so they don't loose condition it's even better. So when the grass has just stopped growing, or the days/nights are getting co...

Very true. I wonder what the barn owner thinks about this? Have you talked to them about this? Surely it's a huge liability for them? Having colts around mares is not an easy thing to do. All my colts either go to the yearling sales or get gelded. After 4 months of age hits, They live either by them...

Re: Should I be concerned about turnout with a 5-month-old colt?

It depends on how mature the colt is. Some aren't mature enough to think about mares, until around 8 -12 months old. I normally try to always keep fillies and colts separated, but sometimes if I have 1 filly and 1 colt foal for the season, they can get paddocks together until around 3-4 months old. ...

Rain scauld or mud fever, are crusty scabs which can ooze liquid. Normally the hair starts to stand up, and you can actually pick the scabs off, especially if the rain scauld is on their back and neck. This isn't what you are describing. It sounds like a reaction to something or insect bites of some...

I use the BOT quick wraps when stabling at night, and when there is any issues in the lower leg. You do have to be careful at the beginning and get the horse used to them, as they do 'warm' up the leg due to increased circulation. I have had mine for years and only just starting to think about getti...
