Re: Spinoff: cantering on the lunge

khall he has a hard time backing up because he has shivers - his legs shake a bit, but we do it daily in hand and a step or two under saddle in an effort to strengthen him. So backing over a pole might be really hard - but I'll try it! We do trot and canter poles and cavaletti or small jumps about w...

OK, tried moving the reins up to the almost top ring last night. Might still be a bit long? When he got tired he curled a bit, but overall head much higher. He's pretty pokey on the lunge, and I have to chase him to get him to track up. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/TnsIA8giSS_4a-NeGLfLRdqLOfczO...

I think for my purposes the west coast is likely too far, and I'd like to limit the search to horses under 6yo to space out my current horse and the up-and-coming one. - Still palomino if possible - Under $15k - Under 6yo (unbroke is OK) - 15-17h - Gaits capable of scoring 7s (no impurities in the ...

Actually I did use a chambon 2 years ago to show Baby Bronto he can reach down and out, vs be hollow. But now, he's past that stage as you say Dresseur, as he's finding slow and low too cozy  I have Vienna reins and they'd be disastrous for him, obviously. Agree Ryeissa - I did Pony Club up to A level in the UK and we had to know all about lungeing as a training tool. It's hard to find people who know how to do it here! Bronto likes to go slow and curled, mostly at canter, so lungeing gives me the opportunity to get him brisk and up. He also needs to ...

Spinoff: cantering on the lunge

I like to do a weekly lunge for the Bronto: quick workout, less demanding of me but work for him. Improves manners too. Generally we do a little walk, then 5 mins of canter both ways with no side reins as I have always been taught not to use SR for canter, then the rest trot in SR. I am reading else...

OK, we have progress. I did some in hand work, connecting "aaaand HO" to halt. I am not asking for a walk/halt until the end of a session and they are much better. I am no longer tolerating yawing and reefing: if consistent, they disappear. If I use more leg, I get better halts I am being ...

Great suggestions here. I recall having been here with a horse years ago and I fixed that by letting him reef himself into a fixed hand a couple times. So that’s the reefing. And for all his yawing and messing at halt (and walking on the trail he’s a real tourist too) I think just not letting him “o...

Baby Bronto is a big guy for me - 17.1 and 1400# or so, and long (87" blanket) so we have issues with inertia... Thanks to the relative impulsion level, I am able to get some nice trot-halt transitions when he stops lightly, promptly, gathered and ready to go. Walk-halt is another matter. Usual...
