Re: Can we discuss lightness in the contact
1. However, what do you consider a good weight in the reins? The horse takes the contact forward but it is always retrievable (i.e., not pulling and taking HHs). 2. does it change from horse to horse? I think good trainers can produce similar results on many horses. 3. if you have a horse that is na...

Re: Developing the Mediums (shifting from monthly training thread)
Ten m volte in the corner and ask for medium on the long side. Try to maintain the positioning. Many HHs are probably going to be necessary.

I would walk away. Quickly. Seems like free might be too high a price tag.

Aside from any future resale, I haven't heard any vet you consulted say this is likely to affect soundness. Will it?

If the horse was in work I would offer an extremely small (insulting) amount of money. Since it is out of work I would pass.

Re: Heel growth versus crushed heels - confused!
I think you're too focused on the idea of growing the heels longer, but that's not really the idea behind pulling the shoes. The idea is that by removing the shoes the entire hoof will be able to develop into a stronger hoof, and as that happens the heel structures (all of them) will become stronge...

Re: Heel growth versus crushed heels - confused!
Underslung heels are the hardest type of contraction to fix. They take time. The hoof must be trimmed suitably to allow the heels to stand up as they grow in. It is hard. You must trim the bar, quarters, toe, etc, in the right ways, and get the heel buttress "back" as far as you can witho...

Heel growth versus crushed heels - confused!
So we pulled the hind shoes and my horse is doing really well without them. The hoof wall at the heel is growing really, so well that at 3 weeks post-trim it is taller than the frog I guess and so was getting folded inward and essentially producing a tear in the hoof wall at that point. I called my ...

Lameness locator
Love it. I wish they would sell these to horse owners. At present it is not for sale to horse owners at any price do to the need for training I think. It runs about $15K for the unit and training to vets.

Re: Pulling shoes to grow heel on the hinds
Thanks for the further responses.
He hind feet look so good. Cupped and growing heel wall which at this point needs rasping because it is longer than the frog depth.
I wish I had pulled the shoes earlier but I am not sure that was in the cards earlier.

In reference to that article, I'd like to know how they distinguish between bay+sooty+pangare on the one hand and brown on the other.

Re: Pulling shoes to grow heel on the hinds
Well it is almost a month since the RH shoe was pulled and about 3 weeks since the left was pulled. I lunged him for several days in the arena and on grass and I thought he was moving the same as with shoes. Of course I was required to doubt my sanity. I have now have had two trainers who I work wit...

Re: Pulling shoes to grow heel on the hinds
Thanks. I thought the point was to grow heel wall but I am just assuming that. Don't they have to grow heel wall if they are ever to be able to walk over non-soft ground in comfort? My horse never stands camped under. He is usually standing correctly or very occasionally since pulling the shoes, cam...

Re: How to handle seller who is not the breeder who wants to sell to competition home only
If I came across an ad that said discount to a show home, I would say I would show to get the discount because there is ZERO chance any seller would follow up on that in any way. This is not true, with centerlinescores.com. If they mean rated shows, which I assume they do. Maybe I'm just a nosy sor...

Re: How to handle seller who is not the breeder who wants to sell to competition home only
And there are enough horses for sale that why would you need to lie to buy one? Because I disagree that "there are enough" horses in a particular age range, training range, price range, location radius, etc. It took months to find my present horse while looking full time with my trainer. ...

Re: Pulling shoes to grow heel on the hinds
Thanks. The tubules are correctly oriented now but are not growing hardly. I think the vet thinks they need stimulation. Pete Ramey mentions this also. Has anyone seen heel grow faster after pulling shoes?

Pulling shoes to grow heel on the hinds
We pulled a shoe on the hind to let an abscess drain and the vet said that pulling the shoes for several weeks would encourage the heels to grow. So we pulled the other hind shoe and I rested my horse for 2 weeks and then started lunging to see what we had. Other than some mild concern about waking ...

Re: How to handle seller who is not the breeder who wants to sell to competition home only
No never. I've never heard of a seller turning down asking price of a well priced horse. Only.lower priced where the quality of care can be questioned. Thanks. If it sounds crazy it probably isn't true. And this is crazy as hell. I should have realized that earlier. I guess I was just surprised whe...

Re: How to handle seller who is not the breeder who wants to sell to competition home only
Thanks for those additional responses. First of all I am talking show quality horses with lots of training. So five figures. That means I am not looking for a pasture ornament. If I wanted a great home for my horse I would specifically not be looking for a show home. I think showing is for the rider...

How to handle seller who is not the breeder who wants to sell to competition home only
I will put this here but if it belongs in the horses for sale section, please more the post. I will be looking for a horse in about 2-3 years when I retire my present horse. I have been monitoring the FB dressage horses for sale group. Occasionally, there is an owner who says "competition home ...

Specific abnormal muscling patterns can also be used to indicate types of physical problems horse have which may or may not be related to riding. I do't know what the patterns are but vets have made reference that they exist. For example, a certain type of abnormal muscling is associated with distal...

Re: lameness frustration
I agree with MC. A vet came out to my barn today for some heel pain on the fronts on a DWB (third level). He took a very careful and detailed history before he started the exam. It was interesting that the horse seemed to have more reaction to hoof testers on the one front heel a few months ago but ...

Re: lameness frustration
Stone bruise? My horse had intermittent lameness depending on where the leg was on a line of travel sort of like you are describing. The thought was that it was a stone bruise. It resolved. I would rest him for a few days and see what you have.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Can we get a jump on April/May training goals thread?
I have moved my horse to my trainer's barn for the summer and am taking three lessons a week and auditing her ride him one day a week. My goal is to get all of second and HP very fluid and correct and put changes on my horse. I did the clinic there a week after I arrived and learned quite a bit. ps....
