I feed by weight, both in hay and pellets. I measure pelleted feed in coffee cans. My Vet once told me that horses don’t lose fitness near as quickly as humans. He said most horses can go about 6 weeks without losing a lot of physical fitness as long as they have turnout. However mental fitness is another issue! So YOUR riding fitness could be more of an issue with this schedule. :D

Blob it sounds like you may be on the right path with RP, but one other possibility just in case. If you have a vet/acupuncturist you might have him checked for TMJ. I had a horse who acted like he might have some arthritis in this joint and she was able to give him some relief.

If you want to feed beet pulp try beet pulp pellets. It’s a lot less messy. I’ve fed my senior horses 1-2 lbs of beet pulp pellets for over 5 years without soaking. I’ve never had a problem. I agree with Blob. A little practice won’t hurt. All it takes is one bad experience and they (horses) decide that they are going to hurt or be uncomfortable every time the farrier shows up. It will probably take many times to reduce her reactivity. Also she’s a mare and a red head :D . (I love them).

I live alone and I have always had a small plug in nightlight that come on after dark in every dark room. They have never bothered my sleep and it is comforting if getting up to investigate a noise. Since they are always on after dark there is no going off and on to disturb me.
