My Tuddy horse had some back issues. Magnesium does help as it is a natural muscle relaxant. Relaxed muscles will have increased blood flow. It won't hurt your horse, so I would try it. Back to 30F today, and temperature is supposed to plummet again tonight. It was melting yesterday and the sun was out and it was nice and warm. I did night chores last night in just a pair of muck boots and a hoody. Tomorrow will be full Carhartt gear again.

I'll toss my hat in here... In my experience, every time I have witnessed lunging with side reins, the sole purpose was to put the horse "in a frame". I don't know why I would want to put my horse in a frame, but rather, would like my horse to find his frame/balance himself and carry it on...

I think I would try increase his grain a bit at a time. One quart of grain is not a lot. Do you think he may need probiotics? To aid digestion. Beat me to it lol! Also, if you can find a liver and kidney flush type product - I use Omega Alpha products. A course of that to give his liver and kidneys...
