I know bad stuff can happen in an enclosed area, but this is the kind of thing I fear most about riding out. When horses get scared, they lose their minds.

I ride exclusively in the indoor. I don't like hacking out. My horse has 24/7 freedom to roam fields or stall and I don't find anything wrong with asking a horse to work for 1 hour in a ring. I think that the ability to wtc on a loose rein is a good test of whether or not the horse is calm enough I cannot ride my horse canter on a loose rein. Kande, one doesn't need to take a horse to a clinic for most things unless they live out in the boondocks. I'm lucky I'm in a horse area. All vets here have the digital X-ray machine and ultrasound in their truck. A bone scan or MRI, yes, you'd need to go to a clinic. I even hate to go to the clinic...

I find riding with one hand is my best test for how correct the horse is. Riding with one hand is beneficial for several things. It is not a good test for connection though. Look at the western riders. They ride with one hand on loopy reins and can even make figures that way, riding off their seat ...
