Re: Jeremy Steinberg telling it like it is...an interesting article
For a "classical" rider I must admit to being surprised that he would be riding a 3 year old quite like he is. I'd much rather see someone up off the horses back and just letting it breeze around until it was a 4yo (or not riding it at all would be better).

Re: Energy!
I must have an electric bum. Developing energy is something I find quite easy even with lethargic type horses. What I find is that so many people block the horse's attempts at energising by trying to lock it in against the bit. The rider really does need to have the confidence to stick with a light ...

Re: Do you ice your horses legs after a tough training day?
Never have iced legs unless there was an injury and that included horses competing up to 2* eventing and doing road work and Grand Prix dressage horses. Dressage work shouldn't be putting strain on a horse (more than momentary as part of a strengthening program) that causes injury - separate from a ...

Re: Needs some suggestions for mediums
So what happens when you let him stick his head up in the air and extend in the trot the way he does in the paddock? Because that's what I would do. Easy enough to get the head "right" when the horse understands that extension is actually lowering behind and lifting and reaching in front r...

Re: Getting more 'jump' in the canter?
Quarter's-in on the circle would have been more likely to flatten a canter I would have thought. Not something I'm inclined to do as I see it as disabling the inside hindleg by stepping it away from the weight. What is the trot shoulder-in to canter shoulder-fore transition like? You can ride that b...

Re: under-tempo
I find horses with balance issues correct much sooner and easier when ridden in a slower tempo. Unless a horse is fearful and running away over tempo usually signifies a loss of balance and that balance can rarely be corrected properly if the tempo is too fast. For a horse coming behind the leg I ce...

Re: Loose ring bits...am I crazy?
Haven't noticed a difference, but then I "bit" to the needs of the horse so maybe I change as required. I certainly have more loose ring snaffles than egg butts (and I hate that some egg butts squeak) but.... I like the fulmer too but for some reason people tend to look at the horse as tho...

Re: Speaking of rule changes, I'm kind of horrified by this new rule: blindfolds?
Oh my. That is a hard one to call. Should everyone be equally 'blind' when they are claiming it as a disability? They don't do this to other para riders.
How about if they made it a rule that everyone had to have the same length legs?

Re: Need help to correct rider collapsing right hip
Thanks for the update. It makes sense. I stopped a rider at a training day last weekend to tell her that she would need to correct her saddle position each time she walked during the test. There was no way that the pony was going to be straight without a lot of time and effort so the saddle would ke...

Re: Need help to correct rider collapsing right hip
I find that most "collapsed hip" riders are working in conjunction with their horse. The horse drops a side and the rider drops a hip. The horse tilts the wither and the rider over rides the bend on that side. All contribute to each other.
I always try to help both together.

Re: Zonik Zooming - and it's quite nice
It is amazing how people can't just appreciate a good ride, well trained horse and perfect rider but always have to dig up skeletons It is hardly "a skeleton". It was a couple of months ago at the European championships. And if it was a "perfect rider" then there would be no pro...

Maybe if people keep hammering the UGLY way he rides poor Undercover then he will keep riding this horse more generously. But I feel for the horse if he decides anything is too hard or he can't do it. :( Out will come the ..... http://41.media.tumblr.com/0eafa0732617332e4c8ad51cafad0a94/tumblr_nt54k...

Re: The first rollkur thread of the new DDBB!
Go to an Arab show they are doing this with Arabians now. I could not believe my eyes when I saw them with the broken gaits and barely moving. I used to love a good WP Arabian, they were so elegant and actually MOVED, now they look like the QHs and it is winning. I've seen this in videos too. It is...

Re: The Double. Gulp.
People forget that it is a learned skill. Unfortunately the natural progression of training seems to come to a sliding stop when you get "finger dyslexia" and two reins seem to turn into 20.

Re: The Double. Gulp.
If the double is new to you then I would start with two reins on a snaffle and learn to feel the difference between them and how to manage them. Nothing harder for a horse that is learning the double bridle than a rider who can't manage the reins. You owe it to your horse to learn how to manage the ...

Re: The first rollkur thread of the new DDBB!
I think that style of "western riding" looks as harsh on horses hindlegs and ligaments as rollkur in on horses necks. Neither allow the horse to move in a manner even approaching normal and both place unfair strain on the horse.
