Re: Spooking
I do a ton of groundwork with them before ever getting on their backs. Both on the ground and under saddle, Maia and Anz both know that shoulder- or haunches-in means business. It's awful hard to spook or misbehave while doing either, so if Anz is being skittish or Maia gathers herself in the "...

It was so unseasonably warm today that I rode in a tank top and summer breeches  I don't know if it was the heat, or shock that I rode her four times this week, but Maia decided she was on vacation, and was not at all interested in working. Pushing Maia forward is counterproductive. That girl...

So when my saddle fitter tightens my girth as tight as she can. I lean down and loosen it. She held at me because she claims uf I wore a backpack I wouldn't want it bouncing in my back. I can't imagine a horse going happily in a bareback pad / treeless saddle unless they were comfortable. Maia's lameness is still visible, but far improved. She's gone from full body "ouch" to isolated to the the right hind. I expect she slipped in the mud/ice when she was out playing and strained everything. We've done some in-hand walk work, and I manually manipulated that hind leg. She wal...

Echoing blob, the first few months (years) of lunging can look like two people in a horse suit. Oy. Maia does that getting strong thing too. Three things I've found that work in my favor: 2-3 strides of spiral in/out are often enough to break the cycle, and get back to work. We have two horses in our 8 horse barn (with only 6 horses) who move stalls frequently. They seem to do just fine in all scenarios.
