Re: Of fly spray and soaked saddle pads: July and August goals and progress
Thanks, I will try that. I learned that scapula technique when I did the Masterson weekend seminar, but Annabelle is so musclebound that there is no groove to get into. I'm not sure if I've ever tried it with T, but she does like the laser around her scapula. I'd love to have one of those stretching...

Re: Of fly spray and soaked saddle pads: July and August goals and progress
Thanks Khall, and I wasn't meaning to only direct my questions to ExVet and Chantal! I don't do the tucks and lifts, but have been stretching her front legs before almost every ride, and I've been using the Equilibrium back pad too. She especially likes to lean in on the right. She does have plenty ...

Re: Of fly spray and soaked saddle pads: July and August goals and progress
Thanks ExVet and Chantal - I do have a question - the judge commented that both the free walk and stretchy trot were "hurried". I can see that she does pick up the walk tempo a bit in the free walk, but she's stepping through, not jigging, so I would have thought this would be a good march...

Whew ExVet, you had a much more challenging show weekend than me! I took Tesla to a schooling show today and last I'd checked yesterday, my first test was 12:57. I know this because I told my husband about 5x since he'd agreed to come take video. I have to say Tesla stepped off the trailer pretty co...

Re: Of fly spray and soaked saddle pads: July and August goals and progress
There is a long thread about it on CotH. I would like the option because I can sit T's big trot when she's relaxed and through, but can see it going to hell in a handbasket at a show if she gets tight in the back. Being able to post would help regroup if needed rather than coming out of the medium a...

Re: Of fly spray and soaked saddle pads: July and August goals and progress
MM got a 4.5 and RP got a 5.5. Ouch. I am just showing in Opportunity classes, so I'm not too concerned about scores, but the insights are interesting! Melonie Kessler is the judge for the second day of the show, and she was pretty kind towards Annabelle when we showed a couple years ago. I think w...

Moutaineer thanks for the detailed show report. You are out there getting it done! Sounds like difficult judging, but the experience is still beneficial. Chisamba, it just goes to show that judges can't always see everything that is simmering under the surface. When I was a teenager I was riding my gelding in a schooling show, pleasure or equitation. Re: Of fly spray and soaked saddle pads: July and August goals and progress
I tried the Fager Gustav eggbutt snaffle on Tesla this morning. The bit is designed to provide tongue relief when put on the regular way, and bar relief when put on "upside down." I tried the latter, and think it might be what Tesla needs. She seemed to stay a little softer in the jaw with...

It really is the dog days of summer, isn't it? Sunday and Monday I had dressage lessons at 6 am with some moments of really good...

That is frustrating Chisamba. Is she that bad at shows? I had a mare who was actually excellent at shows, hated change in her home place. If the water level in the trough next to our home arena changed, she would spook at it every pass for the entire ride, but the water truck roaring by spewing wate...

Horse camping, how fun! Tesla was really soft in the NovoContact this morning; not really going to the contact, but also not getting into that stiff/stuck place. Here we are on the 4th of July without a new thread yet! Annabelle - get those poor knees healed up, and probably get back under saddle at the end of July, see where we are with everything in August. Re: Double jointed snaffles- opinions? thoughts?
I might be on the minority, but both my horses dislike double jointed snaffles. Given that your horse seems dead in the mouth, I wonder about trying different materials. Maybe even wrapping the bit with a little fruit leather to get him salivating and working his tongue. It was helpful for Annabelle...

StraightForward. awful about Annabelle . For the record I never turn a horse over to trainer and rider. I helicopter for good reason. Could it be originating from your hip flexibility? Western saddles tend to ride pretty wide, so I could see that if you are trying to keep your leg under, other parts of your posture and alignment might suffer if you don't have the hip flexibility to really sit into a wider saddle. Of course not all...
