Elderly dog starting to get cataracts

I do have a vet appt scheduled for after the holidays. However, I wanted to ask dog owners with prior experience. Are there eye drops available to control this condition from progressing? I did a GOOGLE and there are currently clinical trials for eye drops to avoid surgery. They were initially studied in dogs I recall and now trying for human use.

A friend uses drops on his young dog to postpone the surgery but I'm not sure what they are. I think they're mostly anti-inflammatory and pain control. Not sure if that helps but hopefully your vet will have some good answers for you.

Thanks dressagefan - I made an appt last week with an eye specialist because of other redness issues too. He said no cataracts but due to old age he has some "crystals" which collect in the eye. Vision is still pretty good. My other concern was a small cyst in the outer left eye lid which was irritating him - tearing. We use non-steriodal drops now given twice daily which is resolving the irritation. It makes me feel better knowing I addressed it for his QOL and comfort.
