Mane hair memorials? Not tail!
Mane hair memorials? Not tail!
When my Decrepit OTTB succumbed to terminal decrepitude recently, I took some of his rather thin tail, a little of his very soft lovely forelock, and a hunk of his perversely thick mane.
Then I discovered that a couple years ago I had cut off his whole mane (the annual whacking of the beast ceremony in spring to prevent sweaty necks) and saved it for some reason.
End result is I have quite a lot of perhaps 6-10” long mane hair.
I can’t find a thing that can be made with mane hair, aside from the obvious hair shirt I could weave while paying his final vet bills... Suggestions? Perhaps a nice fat handbag tassel.

I believe it's Tailspin that makes keychains, and can even put short fur into resin for a pendant (or bracelet charms). Maybe even glue it to an enlarged photo of him, in a shadowbox...

You have such an interesting way of putting things Xan.
Anyone know if horse hair can be spun?
Re: Mane hair memorials? Not tail!
I have the same dilemma. But... I don't really like most 'memorial' items. Horsehair bracelet? Nothankyou.
So, I'll probably hang onto it until we move and I need to make a decision about whether I want to keep hanging onto it.
Realistically anyone who can plait tail hair should be able to plait 6-10" mane hair, should something featuring a short section of hair braid be your thing.

I did this with mane hair. Better than tail hair because it’s finer. The body is maybe 5 inches long. (More pics in the needlefelting thread)

Just the forelock, mane and tail. The rest (the body) is wool fleece , felted and shaped with a barbed needle.

If the mane hair doesn't spin on it's own, try spinning mixed with a bit of wool? Then you could felt and make something interesting like Amado's adorable horse.

Wow! Very inexpensive for this group. Useful too. Could create a few to have an herb garden in a kitchen... Love the Christmas ornament idea.

A friend of mine got this done with her friend’s recently passed away horse’s mane hair. https://www.etsy.com/listing/454965186/ ... =related-6

When I did some dog laundry I ended up with this lil bun of dog hair from all 3 dogs.
It fit perfectly in this:

Now I have Emma [the Lab], Haillee and Jackie with me always.
I also see that Old Friends does them too with horse hair, which I did intend to do with some of Yo's tail, braided, but you could use mane hair too

Very cool ideas. I like the resin bracelet. My horse is white and while still very much alive, preserving her white hair in some form without it getting soiled will be tough. The resin bracelet solves that.

Spirit horse does some things with shorter hair, as noted before, keychains, earrings and some items encased in glass or resin.

There is a local glass artist that casts the horsehair into miscellaneous glass object memorials. My dear friend and boarder who lost her 25 year old a few weeks ago is having some of his hair cast into a glass sunflower which is a special flower for this horse.
Love the felted horse Amado

I found a company in Copenhagen that makes a lovely half moon necklace in a very contemporary design I like: https://bjorgjewellery.com/collections/horse-hair
They agreed to make me one with my horse's hair, and they have other styles not shown that might work too.

Those necklaces are really lovely, Xan. Makes me think of doing this sooner rather than later, if you know what I mean!
