"Not-happening-any-time-soon-VHS" anyone?!
It's sunday morning and I should be cleaning the bathroom, what better time to do some "not happening any time soon" (or ever!) VHS.
On todays menu: Lusitanos. Maybe something like this:
Georgeous horse, ridiculous price (I kind of wanne save him though),
http://www.ehorses.de/lusitanos-hengst- ... 08169.html
Lovely young horse, looks like a lot of work though, but georgeous as well,
http://www.ehorses.de/lusitanos-hengst- ... 61003.html
And the winner is:
http://www.ehorses.de/lusitanos-hengst- ... 93529.html
Find anything anything better? Post it! Want something else droolworthy? Post it (or let the board find it for you)! Get the idea? lets play

@Paula,
The Lippizaner is a hard one! I did not expect that. A few mares, a few freak shows, very few nice ones. I only found one gelding I liked:

Not to highjack the thread, but question inspired by these horses...if you were going to buy a Lusitano, what web sites would you use? I looked on dreamhorse and only see 40 horses in listed in the whole database.... I'm I missing something, looking in the wrong place or ??
thanks in advance!

Since I am horse shopping, it seems like sites like Dreamhorse and Equine. com are not used as much anymore. There are SO MANY BLOODY Facebook groups. I belong to about 4-5 of them. And, no one seems to answer their pms on them. I think people forget to check their "other" mailbox (but maybe this will get better since Facebook is doing away with that).
Horse shopping is frustrating as all heck right now.
Re: "Not-happening-any-time-soon-VHS" anyone?!
If I were actually shopping I'd look for the homepage of the breed in questions registry, look for breeders and studs. That's what I did when I was looking for my Welsh Cob. I contacted breeders directly, that's how I found The New Welsh.

I think i'm somewhat qualified to answer this since I bought one last year. Part of the problem is that lusitanos are relatively rare (low supply), the other part being that spanish horses (lusitanos and andalusians) have a reputation for people-oriented dispositions and gaits that are easier to ride than your average warmblood (high demand). It does not necessarily mean they are everyone's cup of tea but they are neat horses. Consequently, the good ones are expensive, with lusitanos being generally even more expensive than andalusians.
The vast majority of good lusitanos in this country are imported - most of them from Brazil, some from Portugal (although import from Portugal can be tricky). If you get lucky, you find one already in the US being sold by an individual for some reason but more often than not, to get a good one you either buy one from an importer/import auction (Lusitano Collection, Casa Lusitana etc) or you go to Brazil yourself (Sucandi, Interagro).
Silverbridge actually found me my horse (who is a Brazilian import) in the US by trolling youtube for "lusitano for sale" videos, so somewhat random. There is no way i would have found him. The only reason the horse was for sale was because his first owner developed a debilitating degenerative disease. If I hadn't bought him, I most likely would have gone to Brazil.

I'd change the subject of this thread to include "Lusitanos". Maybe wicky will chime in. She has two!

If you know the right people there are many for sale in the US. Many of them aren't marketed on the internet because they don't need to be. Sellers have plenty of interest and placing them on the web brings in tire kickers.

Re: "Not-happening-any-time-soon-VHS" anyone?!
Yes, love my Lusitanos! Bought the first from my friend who bought him at the Lusitano auction in Wellington, that Interagro used to run. She fell in love with Xenocrates, but finally faced the fact that she was too tall for him. Her loss, my big (but expensive) gain! Then I decided I needed a younger horse to learn how to bring along - so I went to Brazil and brought my trainer and my vet. They just wanted to come if I bought the tickets, so I paid for three tickets and we had a great vacation for about a week! Tickets were $1300 each, as I recall, and the Brazilian government reimbursed me the cost of one for buying a horse there. So since both Interagro and Sucandi had all of the X-rays available (and did extra ones on request), bringing vet and trainer to Brazil cost less than a prepurchase and trainer commission. I do not remember if I paid for blood tests. What a deal! Sucandi picked us up at the airport and hosted us (as in no hotel or meal costs) and (I cannot remember) either Interagro or Sucandi took care of bringing us to Interagro. We stayed on the property in a guest house.
Differences between the two - Sucandi buys many horses from farms all over Brazil and picks out some to train and show to Americans. Their horses tend to be taller and more warmblood like. You see them at the age of three. Interagro breeds its own, you can see related horses and you will be told about the traits that run in sire or dams. These horses are not broken until the age of four.. They tend to be more old fashioned Lusitanos
I ended up buying Espartiero, a half brother to Xenocrates (you can still see both of them on the Interagro web site, I think).
If you go can I carry your bags?

Uh, Wicky? If you feel the need to buy someone a plane ticket in exchange for some advice on, well, anything that suits your fancy- I'm not picky, I could be your girl. Just sayin'.

Wicky, I like your summary. It makes sense that I am drawn to the Interagro types (my mare is sired by a ? Interagro stallion--I do not have the history).
I agree that Brasil is the destination!

If anyone is seriously interested I could put you in contact with a few Lusitanos currently available to be seen in Wellington.
