What 3 Words, An Atlas Of Random Words
I think this is an Interesting idea, a system to use instead of unwieldy GPS coordinates.
“It is tough to be a postman in Mongolia. The country is among the world's most sparsely populated — twice the size of Texas with about one-tenth the state's population of about 27 million. Its roads, even in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, often lack well-known names, making navigation difficult and street addresses unreliable. To make matters even more complicated, about a quarter of the country's residents are nomadic, with no permanent homes.
“All of that means it can often be incredibly challenging for the Mongol Post to locate people.
“Things are looking up, though. The Mongolian government has partnered with a British startup called What3Words to overhaul its postal and address systems. Now, instead of an address — like, say, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. — each 9-square-meter plot in Mongolia will receive its own three-word identifier.
" ’What we've done is we've cut the world into 3-meter squares, so that's 57 trillion 3-meter squares,’ Chris Sheldrick, co-founder of What3Words, tells NPR's Rachel Martin. ‘And there's enough words in the dictionary — so, I'm talking words like table, chair, spoon — that you can actually assign three words to every 3-meter square in the world and you don't run out of combinations.’ “
For example, Statue of Liberty is Planet.Inches.Most.
Their home page keeps crashing on my PC. But their map page works for me. I apparently live at “seriously.transferred.dictation”.

And this is great, but how does it help find nomadic Mongolians?

Oh wait, I moved the pointer just a little on our Oregon property and I got aggrevated.ghostly.whirlwind., moved it again and got mistreated. deranged. decks. and then privately. harnassing. gems.
Of course, I cherry.picked. those. Got a bunch of others that weren't quite.as.good.

During the NPR broadcast, the developer of the app said that even the nomads have smart phones. So,
"The first thing that somebody would do would be to discover their three words," he explains, by downloading the app. Once equipped with their own address phrase, Mongolians will be able to provide a precise and unambiguous location for any number of uses — like navigation, banking and online shopping."
Who knew - online shopping in Mongolia!

Sounds like they have better internet service than we do!

Interesting concept...
Bicycles, church bells, rain.
There are not many people in Germany who wouldn't know which city I'm talking about!

Pursuing suspended accomplice. It's easier to describe a place where there are no streets or landmarks using there words instead of global positions,. Is my guess. For Mr/ Ms postman.

What an interesting idea. Also super interested to see this was done with ESRI - the primary geographic information system vendor we deal with at work.

Edited to add - for fun I typed in my next door neighbour and he's textiles.leap.cheater. Is there a method to this madness or are all the 3 meter blocks random?

Compelled boarding loiters
Which is hilarious, since I have this huge property but no fences and the shell of a barn, so must board elsewhere. Compelled boarding, indeed!
Different spots on my 40 acres came in with other words, but this combination was the funniest.

Re: What Three Words
So, our 27Ha (78 acre) property has approximately 25,000 3m x 3m squares! Needless to say I've not looked at all the word combinations... However, from the spot where we load the horses onto the truck to go to shows : "plaiting. judged. shapes." Kind of appropriate!!
Re: What Three Words
There's one spot on my place that's "equestrian, rightly, ventilator". I'm not going to ride in that spot! I don't want no ventilator!
It's a pretty crazy system!!

Yeah, I didn't read all the press, so I was left wondering -- it's great that the world is now mapped, but it seems entirely random. If you have a letter going to matchbook, glue, indeed how does the postman FIND matchbook, glue, indeed?

The postman types it into his app on his smart phone, and his GPS says drive due east ten miles and turn left at base camp? Lol

It certainly is an incentive to get better wi-fi all over the world. Imagine, someone is lost, but can get a signal. They can say, I'm at up. sh*t.creek. and the rescue team can immediately locate them.
