Has anyone gone to Peru? And special places you enjoyed (eating/enjoying to look at/etc) in Lima, Cusco, Puno? Thanks a lot.

Yes, we went last year. We went to Lima, Cusco, Ollantaytambo (sp?) and Puerto Maldenado as well as Machu Picchu. I actually liked Ollantayatambo best, though you can pretty much see it in a day or two. Are you creating an itinterary for a vacation, or are you just looking for side trips while you're in the cities you listed? DH actually went on his own about eight years ago and took a flight to see the Nazca Lines.

Restaurants in Lima??? Central or Astrid & Gaston, or ??? Going to Lake Titicaca as well. Just wondering what were the highlights? And whether you had any altitude sickness at all?

We stayed in the Miraflores neighborhood of Lima, but since we were with a group, didn't do much in terms of eating on our own. Our guide had a degree in culinary arts, and one night we were on our own and went to a higher-end seafood restaurant right on the water in Lima, where his culinary instructors are chefs. He steered us away from any of the "Chifa" restaurants, saying they were unclean and likely to make people sick. We also went to a good BBQ place in Miraflores with him on the last day after the rest of the group had gone. Sorry, couldn't tell you the names of these places though.

In Cusco, we went to a place called Aguaymanto (Gooseberry) that was really good. We actually went back on our own on a free night. They serve pizza everywhere, but it's horrible, so don't bother with that. Try a pisco sour if you enjoy cocktails.

Altitude sickness - we were OK. When you get to Cusco, take it easy and move slowly. Make sure you stay hydrated, and get some Coca leaves. We went on a trek that went up over 14,000 feet, at which point we did have some altitude sickness, which the coca leaves helped, but at 10,000 in Cusco we weren't going to go out running, but felt fine walking around the city. The Coca leaf museum in Cusco is kind of fun if you can find it, and they sell the leaves and ash you're supposed to use with them, in their shop.

Went to a Paso Fino place south of Lima. A fun show, and I got to ride one (OK, they sat us on the horses and ran around with them - a pony ride). Pisco sours ARE great (and pretty potent). I was there on business, so didn't do much eating except in the hotel. Some nice stores - I bought some alpaca products.
