Another horse

Postby jeniferkey » Tue Oct 25, 2016 6:44 pm

I posted elsewhere that I am retiring Miaren, and the Topper pony I got last year to use for hunting hasn't settled into riding like I'd hoped (we did go to our first dressage show and he was rather good), but I've been training him for driving and he seems so much more suited mentally.

So, I talked to a friend who I've known for a while thanks to Haflingers, and she's letting me borrow a Morgan/Welsh cross who's been sitting in her field for a while. He has riding and driving training, but at 11, he'd still be considered green.

I've taken him XC schooling to see how he reacted to other horses running and jumping, and we've been out with the hunt a couple of times and he has shown himself to be very sensible. He's out of shape and we'll see how things develop as he gets fitter, but he's confident and not prone to spooking. He has opinions, but he's very trainable. And best of all, I'm having fun out in the field.

We have our first dressage lesson tonight. He's w/t/c, but bending and halting aren't at the top of his list.

Simon (the pelham is just to get him used to it for hunting)

He's very cute and from looking at his neck, I can understand why bending isn't at the top of his priority list. The thing that matters most is that you are having fun.

My two favourite breeds! I am not surprised at all by the 'opinions, but trainable'. What a cutie.

He certainly has been sitting in a field for a while, hasn't he? Good on your for giving him a job. Looking forward to updates!

He is very cute. I love it when some one takes on a horse that has been on the shelf. Wishing you luck

Morgan x Welsh has been the best crosses I've had. My best broodmare was this cross and she not only did hunter paces, dressage, driving, competitive trail but blessed me with a beautiful filly that someone else is enjoying in dressage, cow sorting, etc. Hope you have as much fun with yours as we did with ours.

He is a cutie! I bet he will be so much fun when he gets his fitness back. What is his name?

His name is Simon. He's around 15.2. Maybe a little taller than Thuy, with about the same amount of body right now. He's already losing weight, but there's quite a bit of crest in that neck. He's insulin resistant and on some meds. I've added in the slow feed hay nets and luckily our grass is thin so he can still get out on the bigger pasture without a muzzle.
Here's a link to more pictures of his first few weeks back in work.

And one more picture because he's cute.

I really enjoyed looking at those pictures through the link you posted. I'm sitting at my desk at work and realized I had a goofy smile on my face. Looks like he's a lot of fun!
