Sigh.
Tap was frozen and I got it thawed this morning. A bucket filled about half-way and then no more water. Pump is running but nothing. I shut it off and hoped that it just needed to be primed. Nope.
of course last night I left the empty trough thinking I would get it this morning. And Irish pooped in his heated bucket in the night.
I dragged buckets from the house to fill everything up.
Of course this happens on a Sunday when the windchill is -22.
argh.
And now I have no water in my barn!

I'm so sorry. It sounds horrible, especially the wind chill.

Just ENOUGH winter...
I remember getting water from my house in buckets and taking it to the horses in a pasture down the street because the faucet was frozen. NO FUN.
Warmer weather vibes coming your way.

What a complete drag!
Re: And now I have no water in my barn!
Our neighbours came down and helped us out. He's one of those guys who just is handy. Turns out that our well was honest to god frozen! Not the pump or the pipe- the water! There's been a bitter arctic wind blowing for days and it found it's way into a crack in the well cover and the water froze. It's never happened before but I think there must have been snow and/or the wind was not as fierce for such a long time. We poured hot water into the well to thaw it, reprimed the pump and voila- water! The well cap is now covered with old horse blankets to keep the wind out.
(FYI- our well to the barn is an old dug well about 20 feet deep. just enough for the horses and it has a cement cap on it. The drilled well is for the house)
I love good old-fashioned country neighbours!

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear others have had water issues too.
TeresaA - You do get some wicked cold weather especially with that wind chill!! Very glad you were able to resolve with the hot water and blankets. I didn't know a well could be so shallow at 20 ft. Many years ago when I rough boarded at some old farms their wells were approx 75 ft deep. We had issues during droughts in the summer. Scary thing is many were near toxic super fund sites - NJ is notorious as a toxic dump state.
Amygdala - I hope you have an easy fix that will not cost you too much.
We are waiting hear for the drill crew to show up this morning - so will let you know how it goes. If I recall last time they pulled out some seashells as we are near the coast. Our soil is sandy - excellent drainage, minimal to no mud but not the best for maintaining pasture (basement is always dry no matter how wet outside). I rely on hay and the little grass is for entertainment - not food source. I'm really looking forward to running water again!!

Theresa, back in the day, at my first farm, I had a well pit. In the winter, I'd keep a 100watt bulb burning down in it. That was enough heat to keep the well and pump from freezing. Don't know if that is an option or would help you in any way.
