Wondering which heartworm preventative you are using for your dog? I'm trying to decide which product to use.

We've been using Interceptor for a several years. In the past, we used Heartgard. If I had a kennel full of dogs (instead of just 2), I'd probably be using horse wormer...

Advantage Multi for mine. It also takes care of other worms and things.

We use Heartgard with Nexgard for fleas and ticks. They are chewy squares and every one of our dogs have always gobbled them right up. A couple of years ago our vet switched to carrying Iverheart which is a chewable tablet. None of our dogs would eat it and I had to put it in their food. Except for the little chihuahua mix. I had to wrap his in soft cheese and coax him. I was happy when vet switched back.

If you have a herding dog breed (or even mix) be aware of the genetic mutation, MDR-1, which makes certain medications like heartworm preventative or flea/tick medication neurotoxic. There are ways around it- usually switching to a different brand will be fine- just be aware. My MDR-1 positive dogs are on Sentinel and do just fine but Heartguard would be toxic to them.

For a list of affected breeds and list of medications that are toxic to them, the Washington State University website has the most complete list:

If you have a rescue dog with unknown parentage, assume MDR-1 possibility (until tested negative) and no ivermectin. If it's a rescue, assume unknown parentage regardless of what you are told :)

Thanks for the suggestions. She is a greater swiss mountain dog, and I got her from her breeder, so we should be good. I believe I will go with either Trifexis or Interceptor, as there are rebates for those:

https://www.elancorebates.com/

I haven't tried the rebate site yet, so I'm not 100% sure if it works, but it's worth a try.

My dogs did not do well with Trifexis.

At first I thought one just really hated the taste the first month, had a bit of an upset tummy the second, and full on vomiting the third try.

My other dog, who usually will eat anything, was a bit slower to reject the taste of Trifexis, but even he refused to take it after a few months (by then the other dog had been switched to something else, just tried to finish up what I had already purchased since this dog did not have any tummy troubles or vomiting with it).

I now use Heartguard and Nextguard for my current dogs, which also have rebates. Of my current trio, two tend to have sensitive tummy with treats/kibble but no problems with the Hearguard and Nextguard. All three beg for them each month like tasty treats, even picky eater.

I ended up going with Sentinel, which I believe is comparable to Interceptor.

And for Scruffy - this is Annie!

Bulldog is on Interceptor, boxer x is on Heartgard plus (TriHeart). Long story, two different vets due to the bulldogs special needs (being a bulldog, after all). I might switch them both to Interceptor this year just to make my life easier.
