Could anyone venture an opinion as to what kind of wood this is? Guesses welcome, too!
Name that Wood
Re: Name that Wood
I would guess birch.
Re: Name that Wood
maple?
Re: Name that Wood
I do love the style of those chairs. They will look gorgeous with the seat cushions in place. They look comfortable with the curved back design.
Re: Name that Wood
Ash! That never would have occurred to me.
Here's 2 chairs, one in ash, one in cherry:
The main difference to my uneducated eye is the "tightness" of the grain, I don't know if that is a generalization or specific to these particular chairs. The images came from Vermont Wood Studios.

Grain tightness can differ even in the same wood, same tree depending on how the log was sliced. Ash has a grayer base as you can see in the natural ash chair but obviously stain can alter that. all woods also change color as they age, usually becoming yellower, redder or more orange.
Cherry tends to have a softer., smoother grain while ash can seem to have more flecks. A close up of the graining would help.

Re: Name that Wood
"Beautiful!" kind of wood.
Re: Name that Wood
The backstory is that I've been stalking Craigslist for a while, looking for a larger table to put in the breakfast nook. These chairs really caught the eye with the design and I confess to spending some time fantasizing about taking up refinishing as a retirement hobby. . . Not too long thereafter, I was looking at a table that was advertised as a Stickley and I went to their site to see if the model was shown there. As it turned out, it wasn't, but I noticed these chairs!
DH noticed the grain in the Stickley's back support ran perpendicular to the grain in the Craiglist chairs (fantasy pop !), but it's a pretty close match.
Apparently the person who is selling them doesn't know what they are either. . . . . I don't think teak can be refinished/stained due to high oil content? At least that's what I've read. Regardless, the price is definitely right!

Re: Name that Wood
There should be a label or stamp or tag on the underside. I guess it might have been on the original upholstery which is obviously gone. Does the seller remember where they purchased them?
Re: Name that Wood
I would guess birch but I'm not sure. Nice style lines.
