Trash to treasure: trailer tack locker project

A few days ago, a neighbor had an old cabinet/armoire type thing out on the curb with a free sign. I grabbed DH and the truck and went back and loaded it up. At first I was just going to use it for storing smaller items in the garage, but then I got to thinking about how the tack trunk in my trailer is sort of a black hole that is impossible to keep organized, and a hassle to access. I board and keep my excess equipment in the tack room of my trailer. It turns out this cabinet will fit pretty nicely, so I set about giving it a nice coat of blue paint and adding some hardware to hold the drawers and door closed while on the road. A bungee cord across the top will hold my Hoof Jack in place. I still want to add a few things, like a fold-out tray and mirror for getting ready at shows and pre-work summer rides, and a whip holder on the side but I'm looking forward to having much more functional storage. Just need to figure out how to secure it to the trailer wall. I'll dress it up with some silver stenciling as well if I can find stencils I like.

Anyone else have a crafty project in the works?

Really nice! Love the blue color.

I'm currently on a hunt for a used armoire that is at least 24" deep inside so that in can make this:

I'd reconfigure it a bit (don't need four saddle racks) but i do need space to store my saddle pads and matching polos and fly veils and for some inexplicable reason husband doesn't like the look of the stuff just piled in the corner, and isn't fan of those industrial metal saddle racks either. Weird.

Snork, there are tons of tack armoire plans online - you could easily build one without trying to upcycle.

I know redsoxs! But i ran the numbers and between the wood, hardware and first couple of coats of finish, it's way cheaper to upcycle a nice armoire than it is to build one!

I love the big armoire tack lockers; I would definitely do a retrofit if I had a spot for one.

A tidy and organized tackroom is a joy only other horse people can appreciate. I showed my husband and he wasn't very impressed. I tried using one of my truck cargo straps, but as you can see it slipped down. I bought some nice camo ratchet straps to get it more securely buckled in today.

This is a great idea, and in fact I have one of these in my house that I store barn clothes in. This would be a much better use. Thanks for the inspiration!
