She had a socky school halter when I leased her. Of course I immediately bought her a SmartPak hunter green field safe halter. That lasted, oh, about 2 weeks before she broke the spring loaded clasp. Back she went into her socky school halter although I did buy a new navy blue breakaway for dress up. About 10 days ago her socky school halter disappeared, to be replaced by another socky school halter which was not breakaway. So I brought out the navy blue halter which she wore for TWO DAYS before losing the screw on the leather tab. The tab didn't break; she somehow popped out the screw. The halter has been repaired with baling twine and I did buy new tabs today.

I have no idea what she is doing in turnout.

And I have an emergency backup backup breakaway halter in kelly green.

If she's losing halters she's either catching them on something or paying rough with a buddy. Probably safer to turn her out without them, just in case, even if they're breakaway.

Just curious...why does she wear her halter when turned out? Barn policy or your preference?

Barn policy.

I have no clue as to whether she's catching it or playing halter tag. This is a pretty quiet group of about 7 mares. I may need an Ariel cam on the pasture.

Does she live outside or come in every night?

During the summer she goes out during the day, comes in for grain in the evening, and goes out again in the late evening. Maybe the bugs bother her at night. She wears a fly mask during the day. I could ask to have her fly mask on in the evening.

Worth a try, though I know some people/barns insist that they are taken off overnight as not to impede vision (I have left them on 24/7 during ulcer treatments with no issues).

Bob wore his fly mask 24/7 during the worst of bug season and he was fine....

I've never had good luck with the break away halters with those leather tabs.

My favorite, pretty indestructible halter is made by Thornhill. Has padding on the head piece and the nose. They wash nice too. My old guy grinds them in the mud and they still hold up. My current one is a good 2 years old. I just bought him a new one, I think they are around $30. Fair amount of color choices too.

They are a breakaway too.
