Most hated domestic task.

Postby Moutaineer » Sat Aug 12, 2017 7:09 pm

I hate cleaning windows. I love the results, but I just loathe the task.

Window cleaner wants $500 to do my house (a million small panes). I just can't bring myself to spend it.

I'd spring for it. Sometimes it is worth any amount of money for someone else to do something. I would pay someone to take my garbage out. That's my most hated chore.

Scrubbing the shower. I would rather clean 20 stalls than scrub my shower.

I don't mind vacuuming or dusting but hate doing toilets/showers. I have to be motivated to shampoo carpets or get out the kitchen floor scrubber. I'd rather clean the barn or clear out closets.

Most of it! I always find ways to procrastinate when it comes to housecleaning.

Most hated aspects: folding & putting away laundry, baseboards, mopping, bathrooms, changing bed linens. Yuck.

I don't mind vacuuming or washing up in winter so I can have my hands in the hot water.

Hate cooking, cleaning the shower and putting away washing.

Amygdala what is the slash and annual 5 cords?? Firewood ?

In order: dusting, laundry, and vacuuming. Laundry beats out vacuuming because of the tactile torture of folding.

I've never windexed the windows at the current house, so no dislike there :) After the umpteenth window fell in my lap when I swung it in, I stopped. Not worth the potential long term damage to the windows.

flight, the slash is the debris --bark, slivers, dirt, etc-- that gets delivered with the firewood. really annoying combing it out of the grass!

i don't much like cooking either....

Family legend: Right after their wedding ceremony in 1944, my mom's sister pulled Dad aside and warned him his house might not be cleaned very well...but the yard and gardens would always look great!

I come by it honestly. 8-)

Dishes. I hate washing dishes. Especially dishes used by other people who just dumped them in the sink or on the counter without scraping and rinsing.

I do have a dishwasher, but I also have many items that due to their composition or design or size I require them to be hand washed. I got tired of replacing these sorts of things after the dishwasher destroyed them/etched them/faded or blasted off the printing or painting on them.

I would gladly scrub toilets rather than deal with dirty dishes.

Most hated chore inside the house is emptying the dishwasher, so DH gets to do that ;)
Second most hated is mopping floors, closely followed by cleaning DH's shower.

Outside? I must admit I hate to clean my horse's toilet, er, stall. I'd rather clean his sheath than his stall any day of the week.

I don't mind dishwasher, though I'd rather dry hand-washed dishes than wash.
I HATE cleaning the toilet. I don't mind the rest of the bathroom, though don't LIKE the shower.
Beyond that, I don't mind cleaning. It does literally take me years to get around to cleaning my car (I'm only going to drive in a paddock or wear my boots in it and get it dirty again, so why bother...), but that's not because I dislike it, just that I don't really have the time when it seems like a pointless exercise.

Hayburner,
Today I picked up a tool at Bed Bath & Beyond to help clean baseboards. I'll have to let you know how I like it. It seems to be like a Swiffer duster.

I have been pondering this since Mountaineer posted.

There really isn't anything I loathe or hate. I don't like doing most of it but I do it. By damned, my horse's pen looks glorious though...as much as a dirt pen can. Poop picked to within the last blade of grass in a ball, water sparkling, mats swept.

Now something I do hate...cleaning the interior of a car.

People clean baseboards? Lol. I'm the worst housekeeper apparently. I love to cook, don't mind vacuuming, cleaning hardwood floors. Will do anything happily at barn (friends private place) hand pick my horses' big hilly paddock daily. I guess I like the big jobs, also very tall 5/11 so loathe bending down to do stuff.

Windows would be one, I suppose. I might do the insides 1x per year, with the exception of the window above the sink, which I look out a lot, so it gets cleaned more frequently.

I have a really nice whetstone and very rarely sharpen my knives. I don't know why I procrastinate on it; it's easy and doesn't take long, but yet I'll cook with dull knives for months on end.

I'm grateful that my husband vacuums and mows; I'm not a fan of those tasks.

I find having a big house the most frustrating thing though; it's never clean all at once, whereas I could get my little first house sparkling in a few house on Saturday morning.
Keep calm and canter on.

This thread reminds me of why I think paying someone to clean our house is a brilliant idea!

(We are not particularly messy, but it is so nice to know that everything will get addressed in a routine manner without us. I find this a huge luxury.)

I need to get on a regular schedule with this, rather than my once or twice a year sporadic appointments. We're busy, and cleaning the house is a necessity, not a priority, so the extra stuff rarely happens -- baseboards, etc.

Forty years ago when I got my first promotion the salary increase went to hiring a regular house cleaner. I have NEVER regretted it even when I lived alone. The bad times are those when I lose a house cleaner and have to find a new one. I have someone who does the bathrooms, the kitchen, the floors, and the dusting every two weeks. Occasionally she does other things but usually that is enough and I spot clean in between and do major clean outs occasionally ie closets etc. Even so...my barn is cleaner than my house  I hate housecleaning. All of it!

I love having a house keeper. I am just not happy to do stuff like clean toilets etc. I love coming home and my house is sparkly! My team does a great great job and worth every penny we spend.

Amado - Yes, they are on my weekly cleaning list, I have to admit - they usually don't get done but once a month! I don't have any pets so they don't get too bad, but they do get dusty.

VBopie - Yes, let me know if this thing you bought works! I have tried using my damp microfiber flat headed mop - but, it doesn't fit on them very well. It's easier to just bend over and do them! LOL

I had a house cleaner for years - now that I'm by myself and not even any pets, I don't think it's worth it and my house gets more messy than it does dirty. By the time I get home from going to 2 barns every nite - I'm too tired to put anything away and never clean up when I do get home. My poor week-ends are spent putting my stuff away and cleaning!

I used to work as a housekeeper (in college and graduate school). I'm really grateful to be able to hire a local company with great teams for this work now. My DH and I finally made this decision after I got really sick and we realized we needed more support for our lives. I would happily give up some other luxuries before this one!

That said, either we need to clean windows or we need to pay extra to get the windows cleaned :-0!
