Want to add photos, but 'file too large'?

Postby TeresaB » Mon Nov 02, 2015 4:10 pm

I know this has been discussed, but I can't seem to find the answer.

I'd really like to add some horse photos but when I try to attach a jpeg file from my camera a roll (iPad) I get an error message of 'file too large'.

Suggestions? Thx!

You need to use an image editing software to downsize the picture. JPEGs taken directly from cameras are often HUGE files. Downsizing the images makes them easily viewable and doesn't suck up bandwidth. Remember, this is a free forum for which I am paying for the bandwidth. So, this is to allow me to be able to afford to keep the forum free.

I can't seem to find the note that designated maximum file size but you need to put your picture through one of the editors to save for the web or other size designation that whatever program you have might be. It's probably coming off the camera at several meg but only needs to be a few hundred k or less for web viewing.

This should be sop for any images that are being posted in similar locations or e-mailed just for web use. Otherwise you are eating up lots of bandwith and filling peoples in boxes with lots of extraneous pixels. The large files are necessary for proper manipulation and usage in print media.

Great, thanks much.

Is image editing software compatible with an iPad? I'm off to search it now. Any particular one?

I'm anti anything from Apple so I couldn't tell you. In Windows, there is Paint that comes with the Operating System and is free.

The threshold seems to be fairly low. I believe I had to make the last photo I attached <200kb, like 175ish maybe?

You can use something like picmonkey for free to resize. It will even allow simple corrections for free.

Well rats. Picmonkey requires Flash. Neither Windows nor Flash is supported on iPad.

My laptop is a company owned asset so I'm limited to only my iPad for personal use.

I'll keep searching.

Oh crud, I wasn't thinking about that! Can you just use iphoto on your ipad? I don't have my ipad here at work, or I would play with it and see for you.

Y'all are lucky that KounterKanter is as smart as he is. There MIGHT be a way around the image size issue. It WON'T however, happen til next weekend as that is when I have time for developments like this.

I have been using Paint to resize my images. I am fighting with YouTube at the moment because it won't upload my videos! BAH!

Chancellor, what would have helped me (well, at least in this case :) ) is just knowing the max size of the files. Then we can fuss around until we comply ;)

I *think* it is 256k from a quick look at the ACP.

For facebookers, just upload the pic to facebook and save it from there. Facebook resizes it correctly automatically...

To be fair, if you are going to upload it to Facebook, you could just link it. Linking seems much easier for me for some reason.

Facebook kills the quality of photos, so I try to avoid using it to upload and then redownload from.

Yes, but if it's just a happy snap it doesn't matter that much.

Go to Photobucket, find the picture, copy the [img] tag that is shown on the right side of the screen.
paste it in here:

I'm trying to do an avatar. Got it down to 90 x 90, but it's still well over 6 KB.

Save it as a lower quality. Does it tell you that 6kb is the limit? I don't honestly know since I would have to find the setting in the admin panel.

In the Mac the resizing is simple. For the iPad and iPhone it is possible but a bit more cumbersome and has to be done in the photo viewer.

On the Mac, double click the photo's name and/or icon.

In the Preview command line, click on "Tools."

Scroll down to "Resize" and click. WARNING -- this will permanently change the size of the file. It is best to copy the photo to your desk top to edit and then delete it when uploaded.

Accept the defaults and type 700 to 900 in the "Width" box (this command changes your photo to 700 to 900 pixels wide from what ever it is currently). Check the change in size at the bottom of dialog box. I didn't get a size warning on my two photo but I believe it's about 400 KB maximum file size. If your photo is still too big, make the width smaller, instead of 700 type 600 until the photo is small enough.

The defaults for the "Resize" tool are:
Fit into: "Custom"
Width: and Height: locked and the pull down tab is "pixels" (these display the current width and height of the photo in pixels)
Resolution: Displays the current resolution of the photo in "pixels/inch"
Check in the "Scale proportionally" box
Check in the "Resample image" box.

It should let you post up to 250kb. I resized to 1048 on the long side and 72dpi.

I worked on the photo resizing problem on my iPad and must admit defeat. I could resize by inserting the photo in Pages and then copying it. But I couldn't paste the photo here on DDBB.

Right now, there has to be a limit to the size of photos that can be uploaded here. The bottom line is that bandwidth costs money.
EVENTUALLY I'd like to set up an auto resize of pictures here. But that will take some time.

Generally, the pictures taken from an ipad would be too big to post on the internet anyway.

I upped it to 10kb but I really don't want to go much higher than that. Remember bandwidth is money.

You could always download The Gimp and use it to tweak your photo sizes.

Its free and is nearly as good as Photoshop for basic image manipulation. :geek:
