He's in the UK, Josette. I see lots of nice reasonably priced horses in UK. I have a friend that was interested in a couple of them but from what she said importing is a hassle. They have to go from UK to either Germany or Holland.

I'm taking a look at a local horse that needs an upgrade this weekend. He might not be the upper-level dressage horse of my dreams, but if he's sane enough I'm fairly sure I can make him into a solid citizen and potentially fund the next horse.

Meet Queso! He's a 5yo stallion (for now; gelding scheduled on Thurs):


Ranch-bred QH whose siblings and parents are rodeo and/or ranching horses. He's not broke (starting that soon), but has a pretty amiable personality. I'm not sure he'll make a mid-level dressage horse but time will tell. He is the cutest thing in the world.

Can't leave a little guy like that stuck in a round pen by himself his whole life (breeder had too many horses), am I right?

He's currently right about 15hh but doesn't have a wither to speak of. I think when he gets fit he'll "grow" a couple inches.

Ponichiwa, that face is not just adorable, it's Hollywood handsome! And yes, you've done right. Queso will now have the chance to learn to be a good working horse and develop a huge fan base, as he clearly deserves. Look forward to your updates.

He is attractive and though the photo is not posed for confirmation, he looks like he has good slope to his shoulder, a nice butt and his neck shape seems to have a dressage potential. Congratulations.

I agree-- he's put together in a balanced-enough way that he's a decent mover. We'll see where he goes! I'm excited to get him started.

Ranch bred are the BEST! They often come in fun colors (blue roan being my favorite) and usually have a head full of sense. Congratulations!! Have fun with Queso.

Usually vets will geld in the field/on the farm. This guy is pretty well endowed, especially for such a young stallion. Don't know if that will have any bearing on how it is done. Quite a few years ago I had a young WB stallion as endowed as this guy is, vet gelded him at the farm, found omasom around the testicals (omasom sp is found around the intestines). Freaked my vet out, said no walking he needs to swell and shut that canal off. Was terribly afraid he was going to spill his intestines out the incision. Colt did colic that night after his surgery, ended up very sore because of the trauma and no walking or turnout, but ended up fine and lived a happy life. Vet did say if he had remained intact he more than likely would have herniated at some, his sire had as a teenaged stallion and was gelded late because of the herniation.

Good luck and I hope the surgery goes well! Rip was my last gelding I attended, 11 yrs ago.

I've done those that have been older without a problem. The vet can always close them if they want to so it's really just their personal comfort level. He's a beauty. Looks a lot like a Skipper W bred gelding I had years ago. He was a really nice mover. Good luck and I too hope the surgery goes well but there's no reason why it won't. .....coming from the one who can do castrations and spays of most species in their sleep. Not rocket science or brain surgery despite what some might wish to claim.

I take in rescue rodents and had two female chinchillas when I came across a boy who really needed a home. I wanted them to be able to have play time together because otherwise it takes a lot of time letting them run around daily and separately. I worried about his pain and was giving him pain meds when another boarder who is a vet that it is a very small op and he probably doesn't need the pain med. She demonstrated in the air it is just little cuts and "boop" thrown them away. LOL. I will never forget that. That med is bitter and he hated it. so I stopped giving it. There was no change in behavior so I think she was right.

Not that any surgery is trivial, but we've got a vet we trust who is a really stellar surgeon, so my bases are covered in any event. Queso got a one-week stay of de-sexecution (see what I did there?) due to a more urgent surgery pushing us down the list, so he gets to hang on to his jewels for one more week.

It's also VERY hot here this week. Perfect time to be starting a young horse; they don't have much energy to put into being athletic when all you want to do is wilt.

I waited to geld my mustang stallion a few months after I acquired him because of flies, needing to get more weight on him and quite frankly I was too busy. In my opinion if they are well behaved, it's best to wait for all the environmental factors to line up that way if you're properly prepared your chances of post-op risks are minimized.

coming to this late. My Hancock line QH got to "mid level" dressage. His medium / extended trot were not much but lateral work tempes and piros, all canter work a breeze.

Plus the sweetest most amiable fun horse ever. Never made a sour face or was anything but a love

Great news, everybody: I sat on Queso for the first time yesterday, and nothing dramatic happened! He's the chillest young horse I've ever handled.

In other learning news, he learned what sugar cubes are and will do almost anything for them. Including getting into the scary wash rack.

Honestly I love starting babies. Glad it's going well. A good egg is a good egg. Sounds like you have a level-headed blonde bombshell. Congrats again.

Yesterday's big milestones: Wearing polo wraps for the first time, and going for our first off-longe riding session (with a ground person to help me out just in case the steering or transmission went out). He was SUPER. I'm spamming all my friends and family with nonstop photos and updates about his progress. Just the best little QH I've ever handled.
