In a moment of madness, I signed up for the "Quick Draw" contest at the Utah State Fair tomorrow. (It's theoretically pretty straightforward, they let you into the fair first thing in the morning and you have until 3.30 to produce a piece of original framed artwork based on the activities at the fair, and a theme of their choice.)
Then they gave us the theme... "Celebrating the 80's" !!! Heck, that's a long time ago, and I don't remember a whole lot about it, what with Art School and all...
So, I had this brilliant idea! State Fair--there's lots of agricultural exhibits. I'll go find the poultry and paint one of those hens with the big feathery top-knots! I love chickens and they are fun to draw and paint! Then I checked out the program. The poultry exhibits don't come in til Tuesday! "Chicks with big hair" is doomed unless the petting zoo can come up with the goods!
Which is why I am sitting here, eating chocolate and drinking wine, researching 80's music.
The pigeon exhibits will be there, so there's Prince's "When Doves Cry" as a possibility.
There's a guy with a bunch of exotics, maybe he's got a "Karma Chameleon" in there...
I'd thought about Sting's "Among the Fields of Gold" for the sheaves of barley, but it turns out that wan't released unitl 1993, which is probably about when I regained conciousness.
There's a mustang challenge thing with an auction where I could find something worth drawing, but how to tie it into the 80's?
Life is so complicated.
A different kind of competition...

Of course the April 1978 release of Jethro Tull's "Heavy Horses" would probably qualify, the title track is one of my favorites. I imagine the fair has a "horse pull" that would give you lots of sketching material.

That sounds like fun!
The only thing I came up with music-wise is "Eye of the Tiger" maybe there are some 4-H cats there?
Then there are My Little Ponies - maybe paint the mustangs that way?
Good luck and have fun!

Surely you have seen the David Bowie vs. Polish Chicken comparison? That would be epic.
