Thanks for the article. Heard it on the radio, then got lost in the holiday clutter. I was in Pompeii in 2001. Fascinating place!! I recommend it to everyone who has the chance. Just some background info: It was ash that covered and killed people and critters, not lava. They suffocated. Most of the gentry and wealthy were long-gone - the volcano had been rumbling for days. Pompeii was a hotbed of decadence. It was the summer playground of the wealthy, close to the ocean for cooling breezes. Sex, wine, and so much food was consumed on a regular basis there were literally "vomitoriums" - rooms where people threw themselves against horizontal protrusions overhanging a kind of ditch running along the inner wall of the rooms so they could vomit, go back to the party and start again. Pompeii had running water; funneled through aqueducts from the snowy mountains into the city, moving by gravity (so the vomitoriums would wash out). There's an amazing quantity of artistic porn in many, many houses and preserved rooms. Amazing... There was a really cool bakery where slaves in groups of three would walk around tiny pedestals pushing cylindrical rocks stacked one on top of another, grinding the grain into the flour. There are chariot tracks worn in the stone in the streets. At intersections there are little islands used to walk across the street to allow your feet to stay dry in heavy rains. There are cut-outs in the center of each little island to allow horses to walk unimpeded. Pompeii was a highlight of many in my trip to Italy.

That sounds fascinating! I hope to visit that area in the next few years.
Keep calm and canter on.
