Keeping head cool under helmet

Postby PaulaO » Wed Jun 05, 2019 2:00 pm

Years ago there were Cookie's Cool Caps, designed to fit under your helmet and keep your scalp cool. Of course they are no longer made. I just about pass out from the heat under my helmet. Any suggestions for products to keep my head cool? (other than sticking my head in a bucket of ice). I've glanced at the chemo caps but they are pretty pricey.

Already wear a vented helmet.

Which helmet do you have? My OneK is technically vented, but way hotter than my Tipperary, for instance.

A neck cooler might work, since that addresses the blood flow to your head.
Keep calm and canter on.

I know this does not technically cool anything, but I love my Equivisor! I find riding in a full-sun arena in the south fairly pleasant with it on.

You could try cutting an oval or two out of an old heavy towel, soaking it in water, and squeezing it out right before you put on your helmet. I used to ride in a cooling vest that contained polymer crystals and was disappointed that the crystals slowly disappeared with use. So, I made a zip-up vest from a heavy towel I that I soak and wring out before I ride. I can throw it in the wash to de-stink it, also! I do live in a desert climate, so evaporative cooling works very well here.

Depending on humidity, it may feel cooler to ride outside than indoors-- you get more evaporative cooling outside.

That said, over here in the sweaty uncomfortable armpit of Texas, I've just accepted my fate: I'm going to be hot and I'm going to be sweaty, so may as well work my horses anyway.

I have an International. I bought a One K that is my winter helmet. However, the International is 6 years old. Never had a fall, always stored in my tack trunk. Is there an expiration date? I remember hearing you should replace a helmet older than 5 years.

I don't know what kind of climate you're in. If you're in dry heat, soaking the liner of the onek in COLD water before hand can help a lot.

If you have a lot of humidity, that's just all gross and it's usually best to get the most ventilated helmet you can find.

I'm currently in high humidity and I find I want to keep myself dry more than cool.
