Many of you know of Rip's upper airway issues. He has been doing very well now for 2 years with our management regime. Was just scoped in August with very good results. But since returning from Portugal his breathing has been sounding rough, almost like he is a roarer. So I had my regular vet out yesterday to bag him and take a listen. He is rough sounding in his upper airway, lungs are clear so am hauling up to my vet who has been treating him for the NCS and doing the scopes and helping me manage his issue next week. We've upped his throat spray and hoping it is just this dry weather and dust that is irritating him and not the cicatrix advancing. Depending on this scope we may need to go to clinic where they scope on a treadmill which would mean a trip to KY or FL or to Aiken where they can scope with him US.
Rip's dam Gallie has had a slab fractured tooth now for many years. We have monitored it yearly when doing her dental and all has been good until this year. She has been having issues with mild chokes on hay and my vet thinks it is from pain from the fractured tooth that now is loose from age and the bottom opposing tooth has shifted and needs to come out. Gallie is in good health but she is older (24) and has foundered before in 2015 so just a bit worried about her undergoing the procedure.
Always something with these horses!!
Jingles for Rip and Gallie please

Jingles coming your way.
They should be able to remove Gallies bad tooth with mild sedation.
Hopefully, you will not have to take a long trip with Rip. Fingers crosse dry it's just the pollen and dust.
Healing vibes to both

Fingers crossed and jingles for yours. I agree with Hb on both counts---the dryness is causing a lot of allergy/irritation flares in horses.

Good wishes for happy resolutions all around.
Re: Jingles for Rip and Gallie please
Thanks All for the jingles! As predicted Gallie did fine with the tooth extraction:) Turned out to not be the tooth we thought though, she had another one that was going bad and infected but not abscessed thank goodness. Came out very easy, now on antibiotics and equiox for several days.
Rip shows some slight progression in his upper airway (NCS) issues. Some spidering which was not there in August maybe some thickening of the cicatrix. So increased his throat spray to daily and rescope in a month. So continued jingles for him please!
If he gets bad enough I would have to make a decision of whether or not I would be ok with having a trach done. It would be that or retire him, or just keep him at the lower gaits (worse at the canter)
exvet and those of you with any experience with trachs, thoughts?
