Found My Pony

Postby Tarlo Farm » Tue Aug 11, 2020 12:46 am

Meet Gem (formerly Dakota). She's a Quarter/pony cross, buckskin, 13yo, 14hh with good legs, fine feet, and some good training way back when...

She was VERY surprised I knew how to get her to lunge. And that's my Man of Mayham, Clay with her.

Congrats - she is a beautiful pony!

And, the Men of Mayhem - is that the litter that Sac (or someone else?) rescued and placed with UDBB members? If so, what a blast from the past!

He is Canyon! Ten years old this spring. Best. Dog. Ever. (of course I say that about all my dogs, but I REALLY mean it this time. Seriously - EVERYONE who meets him says that.)

And thanks all, yes, she's cute and is proving to be smart and willing.

I remember that! It's great to see one of them now and to know he's the best dog ever.

I have a couple little friends age 9 and 6 who have out-growing plunking around on my old sway-backed shetland and are not ready to ride my big riding horse. She's for them. And other kids. But I wanted a pony big enough for me to get on in case she gets naughty.

I'm changing her name to Gem. Because she is. Somewhere in her past she has some good, solid training. I have to undo six years of pounding around in a back yard, head up, under-neck muscle tensed, back dropped, but she gets it. She's a tiny bit sour and spoiled; momentary resistance when riding away from the crew, slow walking and hesitating when turning away from the barn, wouldn't stand to mount, not used to standing quietly when mounted...but she's getting it. And she's big enough for me to ride to correct (and I'm 5'7" and 145#). She's got a GREAT big-horse walk when she's moving out. Haven't trotted yet, because it seems they likely did rare around on her, and I want her quiet and comfortable and steady at the walk when first heading out. But she's really a Gem. ;)
