Khall, so glad you are deciding to keep this boy for a while! He'll enjoy a beach boy vacation!

RE: heartworm, I guess things have changed in the 11 years since we've had a dog. Didn't know about the 2x testing for dogs with unknown treatment history. Our Bentley, adopted last Dec. at age 2 (best guess) had a single HW test- negative--and was immediately put on the preventative. I wanted to have him tested again last week during a routine wellness exam, but vet said unnecessary... I'd still like to re-test despite his being on the preventative.

Maybe a Go Fund Me situation would help defray or pay for the costs, especially since you undertake fostering. Let us know if there are avenues to assist.

I appreciate the offers of financial and medical help! When I took on Henry I was assured by the person who was searching for a foster for him that she would help fund raise for his care. That never panned out. I did have help with his initial vetting costs even a board member helped with his neutering and radiographs. Also my border helped but since this is 6 months down the road he’s pretty much become my responsibility. Just had his ears treated a couple of weeks ago. Typical hound ears in humid Georgia with the ear infection. I will be doing once weekly cleanings from now on with vet prescribed cleaner.

What I usually do with my foster dogs is to give out my vet’s phone number. They can call in contributions directly to my vet. I’ve been lucky over the years to have support of friends and family with my foster dogs. Always helps the rescues out for vetting to help be covered. My vet is great and gives me rescue prices for all my foster dogs. She’s not fond of many of our local rescues and I understand where she comes from. But she knows how I care for my pets and fosters and gives me a break with my fosters as well as going beyond when I’ve had emergencies.

Texsuze here in the south vets usually do annual heart worm tests because prevention is not foolproof here. Anytime there is a negative dog test positive on prevention the company pays for treatment. I’ve known of several who’ve had their dogs pop up positive on their annual test while on prevention.

Most of my adult foster dogs end up going through heart worm treatment. Why I was surprised Henry was negative initially. All went through treatment with no issues using fast kill. Henry has been on prevention since he tested negative initially with no issues.

Here is my vet’s phone number for any who would like to contribute 478-297-9183. Henry and I are very thankful! DH is usually pretty cool about it all. He’s beginning to warm up to Henry now some. He’s just not used to dealing with a dog that has a working background and had no manners when he came.

Some excellent news on the heart worm treatment front. The company who makes interceptor HW prevention is going to give Henry 6 months free HW prevention and $250 towards the treatment! Because I did the right thing of testing when he tested negative put him on prevention then tested 6 months later. That’s a huge help!
