The original goldhorse, Junior, has just turned 23. He's been retired for a very long time due to navicular, low ringbone, and arthritis everywhere. He recently lost his roommate so I've been spending more time with him. A new trainer approached me about using Piggy for some low level lessons. I steered her to Junior. I've gotten him out and ridden him all over to make sure that he's still safe. He objects to a trot so he's only going to be used for the wee ones. I'm going to work with the farrier to see if we can pad him up for more comfort but if he's walk only, then so be it. Here he is with one of his lesson girls. He walks so slowly and carefully to take care of her. I think he enjoys his new job.

Sounds like the perfect way to stay engaged during retirement. I think the value of these more mature horses are greatly underestimated. I also feel if done properly it keeps them 'younger' longer.

That's exactly what these saints are perfect for! They need a job, and they are SO valuable for new riders.

When he retired I think my oldster 'K' would've been a good prospect to use for the littles' lessons.
Unfortunately, there were no appropriate lesson/riding facilities close enough to me, and he just had too many feed, care and health considerations to loan him out long term.

Junior has a perfect retirement gig!
