Jingles appreciated or ending up the new year with new equine issue

Postby khall » Fri Jan 01, 2016 7:55 am

Ok, I am ready for a break here in Georgia! Between pythium and now suspected hepatitis I am drowning in vet bills. My older mare Gallie decided to run a high fever today scaring the pants off of me considering that she is still in recovery from serious bought of laminitis in June. 104.6 when I took it this morning after she did not eat all of her breakfast and was picking at her hay. She did this one other time in 2009, same deal and ended up with elevated liver enzymes. Suspected a leaky gut that seeded her liver with bacteria at that time, requiring 3 months of antibiotics. Much lower GGT this time but still thinking same deal, so banamine and now metronidazole, may have to add in another antibiotic if she keeps running a fever. Came back for late barn check to find temp back up to 103. Banamine and icing her legs/feet brought it back down. Thanking my lucky stars she is a gem for standing in a bucket of ice while I pour frigid ice water down her legs.

This after record rainfall for the last two weeks, horses in more than usual due to horrid rain, soggy ground everywhere. and still dealing with pythium allergic reaction in my main riding horse and one of my boarders. Scope scheduled next week for them to see if the second round of immunotherapy is working. Vet bills and the worry is driving me to drink.

I had never heard of Pithium and went to do some reading

My best wishes for you and your herd. I hope the weather just gets back to a reasonable levels so that stress can be eliminated. Fresh air, sunshine and routine does a body good.
