Tragedy at STB training stable last night

There was a horrible tragedy in our area last night: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener ... -1.3389620. Over 40 horses were killed in this fire. The fire crew had trouble dousing the flames because the water was frozen (it was -20 last night). My heart goes out to all these horses and the people that loved them. It was such a beautiful facility. I took my horse there once to do a charity ride at the therapeutic stable across the street. The owners were kind enough to allow us to use stalls to tack up and then turn our horses out in their paddocks while we went to the picnic afterwards. It was the first time my horse (an OTTB) saw standardbreds in action hooked up to their bikes. I'll never forget the place, nor the kindness I was shown there. What a horrific loss.

My friend is working on a crowdfunding site to help the trainers. If anyone is interested, it is here: https://www.gofundme.com/abhm5afg. These are down to earth people who live and breath horses. They've lost their livelihood and their best friends all at once. :(

I read about this and was wondering if anybody here had a direct connection. So very sad.

Many of the Standardbred tracks in the area are planning tributes to the horses tonight during regular racing. It is a tragic hit to an industry that is already struggling. :(

As part of the standardbred industry it's hard to believe that such a loss can occur. It is a tight nit community and I really feel for those owners and trainers involved. It would not only heartbreaking but also devastating (emotionally and financially)

The link above just got posted to harnesslink.com

It is an awful awful feeling, and cleaning up is shocking and horrific, insurance requires photos and proof. Our vet was kind enough to legally identify the horses even though most of the identifying marks were burned off into hard to see grisly stumps, I could still tell who was who, and identify them to the vet so he could make a positive id. it is almost impossible to remove the horses intact, so attempting to pull them out of the stalls was just an ordeal i was able to spare my owners, but it sat in my brain for a long long time.

Once does not think of these things when you read a story, you think of the loss and the horror, but not about how it continues and the after effects. I tend to avoid reading or looking at these stories, but I read this one. I send out huge jingles to anyone who has experienced this. Its simply not pleasant.
