Jasmine (rescue horse) update

I rescued a little filly off of the kill lot this time last year. Here is a picture of her at the auction lot and a picture of her out in the pasture today. I got very lucky I think. She is a hoot to work with too. She is not two yet, at least I don't think so. Best guess is about 18-20 months. I think she is stock horse (quarter horse) bred. Not sure about that either. She has some nice movement and seems pretty athletic. Looking forward to watching her grow up and seeing what the future holds in store for us.

When you rescued her, it really made me fantasize about an auction save. She is is just gorgeous. Does she still have the wonderful brain tendencies you mentioned when she first came home?

Thanks everyone. I can't get over how lucky I got.

She is entering the terrible twos I think. LOL. I worked her a little too long the other day and she started acting out a little...bucking, kicking out, and even striking out but settled back down and did as asked pretty quickly. She is really soft in the face. I was working on asking her to lower her head, give at the poll and working on circles and footfall. It is pretty concentrated work for a youngster and I should have quit while I was ahead. I can't wait to go to a young horse handling clinic with Brent Graef. I know that will help me a lot with her. She is smart as a whip and really is pretty nice. She got to go out into the big pasture not long ago and the herd is teaching her some manners. Surprisingly she is not stirring up as much trouble as I expected

I don't know why I decided to turn the camera off at that moment, it was just starting to get good

Thanks everyone. I'm just glad she is happy and healthy.

W-O-W!! If I were the person that dropped her at the auction, I'd be kicking myself right about now. Love her!

I really have no idea why they took her to auction. Her feet were messed up but with some routine trimming they are pretty close to normal feet now. Obviously no lameness issues. I think she is exquisite and feel very lucky to have her. Best $350 I ever spent. :D

I wonder if someone was breeding for western pleasure. She certainly is not built for that. But definitely built for a bridle horse which, right now, is my plan for her.

Noooooo, she's not WP-bred, not at all. Certainly looks like cow horse/ranch breeding though, so she should make a bridle horse for you.

You'll really like Brent Graef, he's a great guy and teacher (forgive me if you already know that, just stating the obvious!)

I love Brent! I've done every clinic of his I can for years now except the young horse handling. I can't believe how soft Jasmine is because of my learning from him but I've probably already made her heavier than I would after this clinic. I particularly liked his clinics on the trails but he is not doing those anymore. A week after the YHH clinic I'm doing a cow working clinic with him. Then my clinic funds are gone for the year :(. As you said, super nice guy and teacher.

Cute cute cute! I'm looking for a blue roan gelding/colt 1-2 to go with my warmblood colt who needs a horse friend. Kaufman Kill Pen really ticked me off so I refuse to support them by buying a horse. I'll go to the auctions myself if I have to.

There is some interesting reading on KKP that was just published last month.

I have heard some bad things about the Kaufman pen. I adopted Jasmine through Cie Sadgeny. She typically represents the horses truthfully (some have been older than her estimates) and posts videos of the kids or adults riding them depending on what they are appropriate for. The vids are great for looking for lameness issues. She tries to pull them off the lot to a hub before they get sick. Jasmine had the snots but they had pulled her and started her on antibiotics. She got better quickly but I kept her in quarantine for 30 days to be safe. The hub I got Jasmine from is in Stillwater OK.

Fast forward 2 years. Jasmine is 4 now. Last year I lost my 15 year old Ditto that I did everything with. She was an amazing horse and partner. Jasmine rescued me back then. She has really stepped up to the plate and is filling some big shoes. I've ridden her in cow working clinics and some Cowboy Dressage shows. She is just so sane and willing. Finally got some professional pics at a show last month. Love this little mare so much!

And another Wow! I really enjoyed the mounted picture. You look so tuned into each other. I think she is a stunning WD horse but I can picture her as a traditional dressage horse, too. I love your colors on her.

Sorry about your Ditto,

Thanks demi. I am really working hard to get her to use her back and move correctly. I'm not sure if her gaits are big enough but she is a pretty mover. I love the variety that Cowboy Dressage has to offer and I'm starting her on the garrocha to do a freestyle. She is such a fun horse and game for anything :)

I am terrible at some of the color designations. Is she considered a grulla?
