Nutrition and Feed change: positive outcome

Postby piedmontfields » Sat Jan 28, 2017 11:13 pm

My mare has (fairly mild) PSSM. I manage it with very regular exercise plus a lower sugar, higher fat diet and ALCAR (acetyl-l carnitine).

I recently moved barns. After several years of struggling to keep weight on this mare, she actually looks like the "schooling 3rd level" horse that she is. Round and well covered, without excess fat. She looks like a powerhouse ready to dance on a dime!

What is the change? From a very nice whole foods diet without soy (which I think can be fine, but took a lot of finesse + added supplements for my mare) and hay/turnout to Seminole Dynasport (a higher fat lower sugar--but not super low--feed with soy) + LOTS of similar hay and better turnout (browse available even in winter).

The difference is amazing.

Thank you! My gut is that plentiful hay is the key (this is behind why I moved barns). However, I am relieved that she is well on more "normal" commercial feed--although it is of rather high quality.
