Interesting, I have one of these but didn't know horses might too although I suppose it makes sense that they could.

My mare had extra ribs. I do not know which vertebrae they attached to, but from memory, they were articulated, and made of cartilage. She had them on both sides. We could feel the same in her foal.
The breathing muscles attached to the cartilage rib, rather than extending further backwards, and would have affected her breathing abilities under heavy exertion.
I still have one of her ribs in my freezer. I must clean it up...

The abdominal muscles involved in breathing and flexion during locomotion are restricted over an affected T18.
