A local place here, Grand Oaks, has "cabins" they rent with small barns attached. They are basicly a small house attached to a barn with a breezeway where the "garage" would normally go. Find the house you like, and instead of a garage do a carport, then the shed row leading off from the carport.

Maybe you can adapt this floor plan?

look for French Farmhouse plans

But I always like Maple's house/barn combination, a lovely structure, very well thought out, fully functional... just a beauty of a building

I have one that she posted years ago, but with all the shenanigans about ownership of posts I am reluctant to post without permission

Tarlo Farm posted and is going to upload pics of her Barndominium tomorrow. Here's a link with description of possibilities.

And I did. Building is 60X56' pole barn. Then I had my crew build my home within my barn, on the WSW side of the building, the home 30X56. I enter the barn from the house through my centrally placed mechanical room. Zoning inspector viewed the whole thing as an "attached garage", so we followed code for that. I do have vehicles in the "garage". And horses. And hay. And a tractor.

May I ask if you had any trouble financing this project? We are looking at a place on 5 acres that has a barn apartment as the only habitable structure. I have no idea how to get this place financed, because there is nothing that is considered a primary structure. Would
we have to get it financed as a raw land purchase?

Raw land is REALLY difficult to get financed You need a friendly banker and a great plan for future payments. Just keep referring to the structure as a home with an attached garage. That's how my building inspector viewed it. Can't remember the last time a banker came out and looked at something I was building/remodeling. Oh - that's because they never did.

We talked to the lender today and they have nixed our project. There are too many structures on the property to be considered raw land and the apartment was not permitted. The way the place is designed completely precludes it from being permitted. I suppose in a way we are dodging a bullet, but I really, really like this place. It has 13 18*18 stalls in a wonderful block barn. Cinder block is coveted here because of our excessive heat in the summer. They run 30-ish degrees cooler than pole barns. I think it would probably cost nearly 100K to build it again.

Le sigh. Onward.
