Best Bit ?

Postby Kamama » Sat Sep 07, 2019 12:36 am

I need some advice.
Mare has narrow jaw and normal palate but thick lips.
Currently trying a 135mm Baucher with a bean. She likes it but it is about 1/4" too big. A 5" is too small and 5.5" is way too big.
I'm also concerned with her narrow mouth that a 3 piece mouth is not going to work.
Am I a bad person for thinking about trying a single jointed Baucher?
I don't have a trainer/instructor so coming here for input.
Thanks.

What about a 5.25" bit? Dressage Extensions has them.

If she doesn't have a shallow mouth, I'd try a single joint.

Not sure why a single jointed Baucher would be bad? I'd look for a 5.25" bit though. It's surprising how much difference 1/4" makes.

Here is a single joint 5.25: https://www.doversaddlery.com/albacon-b ... X1-010149/

You might also look into Myler. It doesn't look like their Baucher comes in a 5.25, but they seem to fit a little big. My appaloosa mare had a mouth similar to what I think you're describing and I rode her in a Level 1 loose ring Myler snaffle.
Keep calm and canter on.

I think single joint is fine. My big honking (retired) WB gelding has a low palate and a surprisingly narrow jaw. He always went better in a single joint bit.

I tried a single joint Baucher on her and she is much happier.

Glad to hear the good update! It is amazing what a difference the right match between bit and horse can make.
