Updating your showring bling on a beer budget
Updating your showring bling on a beer budget
Hi guys
I thought I'd share my latest little project with you. I took a break from showing this year while growing human baby number 2 (expected any day now) but am looking forward to returning to the show ring next year. I have been very much wanting to update our look, but haven't got the funds right now to buy anything new.
So I had a crazy idea. I could bling my existing helmet and brownbands myself!! So I went to Michael's (big box craft store for those not in NA), and bought a couple sheets of stick on rhinestones for $7 each. I had two browbands that I blinged - one that was a flat chain and the other that was a flat white and silver braid. Here are the helmet and the chain one (before and after).

And here is the other browband (the flat white and silver braid one), before and after.

Love it! I was thinking of doing that to my helmet, but I'm chicken. Yours looks great.
Keep calm and canter on.

Beautiful and very creative idea!

I'm so out of touch. We are blinging up helmets now?

If that is a question, the answer is definitely yes. They can be nice.

Well, I do have one. Sort of a swirly design on the side in crystals. A little more casual but I do show in it. And then my trainer has one with a crystal design like is shown in the OP. Navy with blue crystals. It does look nice, to me, at least.

Ha! I can see that. You need to be self-aware, for sure.

Speaking of Cartier and his bling...I can't wait until I'm home and championships are over so I can start dressing him up again. Those 3 new browbands are just waiting to make appearances!
Re: Updating your showring bling on a beer budget
Rosie, what type of adhesive did you use?
Nice job!
Nice job!
Re: Updating your showring bling on a beer budget
Thanks guys - this was ridiculously fun. I should also note, my helmet is due to be replaced this year so it's not like I am risking a brand new helmet. Also, I tend to be fairly conservative when it comes to bling. I much prefer a subtle look where there is low contrast between the colour of the bling and the colour of the horse. That's why I think Cartier looks so smashing in his beautiful sparkly browbands. It's hard to tell from the photos, but the crystals I used are brown so the effect in real life is more subtle.
mld02004 - These are actually stickers rather than real rhinestones, so I didn't use any adhesive at all. Of course, there is a risk that they'll fall off, but I doubt it as the ones on the helmet are all attached together, and the ones in the browbands are fitted carefully into the slots in the browbands so they'd probably stay even without adhesive.
Also - one other benefit - if I decide I don't like it anymore I can just pop them out with no permanent damage.
PS. Still waiting for baby to arrive...

I love the brown crystals. That will look so cool on Bliss and his gorgeous liver chestnut self (at least IMHO).
Good for you on the economy. I thought of that when I was at Michael's once and I couldn't make up my mind. My brain was exploding with the options so I went home with nothing .

I think it looks great. I was fairly conservative about bling but then I bought a gray mare and realized she could wear anything.......
